Vincennes, Indiana is a small town in the northwest corner of the U.S. state of Indiana. The population was 4,876 at the 2010 census. The community is located on the east bank of the White River, about 15 miles (24 km) northeast of Indianapolis and about 25 miles (40 km) southwest of Chicago. It was founded in 1837 by Nathaniel Gibbs as a trading post on the west bank of the White River. In 1840, Vincennes became part of what would become Evansville,Indiana; in 1848 it passed from Indiana to Illinois and then to Michigan Territory; and in March 1853 it became a city under its own charter.
