Vincennes is a small town in the U.S. state of Indiana. The population was 1,821 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Vincennes, IN Metropolitan Statistical Area.The first settlement in what became Vincennes was made on July 6, 1814 by Captain John Sturgis and his men when they were sent by General Andrew Jackson to investigate a reported Indian troop consisting of seventy-eight men and six cannons along the Wabash River. They found no Indians and returned to their basecamp, but left behind a seed corn crop that grew into an extensive and successful wheat farmstead which still exists today. In 1818, Colonel Solomon Musgrove purchased land from Major William Posey for $2,000. He built a log cabin on the site which he named Musgrove Manor after himself and his wife Anna Maria (née Jennings). In 1827 he donated another piece of property to the town for use as a public square or commonwealth square known as State Square or formerly Park Square because it lay across from present day Municipal Court Building on West Market Street. In 1830 Vincennes received its charter as an incorporated village from then-Governor Richard Yates with one hundred residents under its jurisdiction; however it would not grow much beyond this until after General Anthony Wayne's victory over British forces at Fallen Timbers in late 1794 gave Vincennes control over much of central Indiana resulting in increased development around it including growth of industry such as coalmining and manufacturing while also adding new residential areas expanding eastward upcurrents towards Greencastle until reaching what is now East Vernon Avenue withintoday's limits of downtown Vincennes During Prohibition era many businesses closed down due to tax laws prohibiting alcoholic beverages although some did remain open such as J H Barbier's confectionery store which continued operation until 1951 despite being raided numerous times by law enforcement officials After prohibition ended in 1933 most business closures halted but some did continue such as Jack Dempsey's bar which reopened following Prohibition duty during World War II before closing again several years later
