Vincennes is a city in Indiana, United States. The population was 902 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Vincennes County. The first settlers in what is now Vincennes were French colonists who arrived in 1679. The village was founded by Pierre de la Fayette on a bluff overlooking the small town of Vincennes and became part of the French colony of Illinois. In 1810, after France lost its Mexican War against Mexico, President James K. Polk ordered Ulysses S. Grant to take possession of all Orleans County including Vincennes and build a military post there as part of General Grant's "Great West" campaign in 1812-1813. The post was named Fort Knox after Ulysses S. Grant's older brother Knox who had commanded American troops during the Mexican War and also served as Governor of Louisiana from 1809 to 1813 before becoming Secretary at War under Adams. When Fort Knox was completed in 1814, it served as an American military base until shortly before its closure in 1865 due to cost overruns associated with the American Civil War that began that year. At various points during its history, Vincennes housed various Army garrisons: one during World War II; another from 1957-1960 when it served as home to Headquarters United States Army Europe; and another from 1966-1978 when it served as Command Post for NATO forces stationed there throughout their era of operation known collectively as Allied Forces Europe (AFE). In 1870, John Cavanaugh organized the first school district in La Porte Township which included present day Vincennes proper and parts of five other villages: Clarksburg, East Elmira, Greencastle, Lafayette Heights/Shelbyville and Uniontown). By 1890 most residents were Irish Catholics with German ancestry making up about two thirds of the population; however by 1910 only about one third Irish Catholic remained while Germans made up almost half the population overall (about 60%). This pattern held true through much later decades continuing until suburbanization occurred mainly among Whitecollar professionals such as those born outside America moving back into high income cities such as New York City or Washington D C . In fact much recent gentrification has taken place within traditional Italian neighborhoods located near modern shopping malls rather than within historical black Italian neighborhoods which continue being economically majority Black

He intended to stop Mexico from expanding their empire and establishing themselves in what is now California. On the way, they reached Indian Territory and camped at Vincennes on the banks of the Wabash River. This location provided excellent grazing land for white settlers and buffalo hunting for Native Americans. In 1817, General Jackson's forces moved deeper into Indian Territory when they discovered gold mines there. By 1830, over 2,000 white people had settled in Vincennes. They began to build homes, businesses, churches and other civic institutions. The area around Vincennes became known as "the magic city." During the late 19th century, many industries sprang up in Vincennes including printing plants, meatpacking plants and breweries. In 1931-1932, Vincennes hosted the first World's Fair in America which attracted more than 100 million visitors who stimulated local economic growth throughout much of the 1930s and 1940s. Postwar prosperity has led to increased development within Vincennes but also brought challenges such as crime rates increasing during this time period; however these have recently been decreasing
