The population of Vincennes was over 100,000 in 1907. It is now just under 50,000. The town has a rich history and is home to many famous people such as Roger Bannister, Jr., who was born here in 1944. There are also several colleges and universities in Vincennes, including Purdue University and LaSalle University.

The city of Vincennes, Indiana was founded on November 12, 1795 by General Anthony Wayne and his army. The city became a thriving center for trade and commerce. In 1812, the United States acquired the territory around Vincennes from France in the Treaty of Paris following Napoleon's defeat at Waterloo. This led to increased trade and commerce between Indiana and Canada. At the same time, American Fur traders began to explore this area of central Illinois which included parts of what is now Vincennes. In 1814, General Wayne moved his troops eastward towards Fort Dearborn to help defend against Indian attacks. Afterward, the town grew rapidly with its new factories, mills, schools and churches. By 1830, it had a population of over 100 people. In 1837-38, General James Kossuth led an uprising against Mexico in California which caused much havoc in central America including Vincennes. As a result of this event and Mexican actions throughout Central America during this time period (known as the "Kossuth Rebellion"), many Americans began to flee Mexico City for various reasons: political instability; economic hardship; or religious beliefs ( Catholic priests were often targeted). Many residents chose to move to other parts of Latin America or North America where they could find stability and opportunity. One reason why these immigrants settled in central Indiana was because there were no open territories available in that region at that time – only part of Texas was under Mexican control while most other areas were under American control with varying degrees of autonomy or dependence on both nations respective governments). By 1840-41 however, things had changed considerably with American expansion into Mexico proper resulting in war with Spain over their claim to this land as well as seizure of much Spanish property west of New Orleans along the Mississippi River Valley; creating new opportunities for settlers within newly acquired Mexican territory as well as increasing pressure from Anglo-American interests in those lands seeking access to resources such as gold and oil potentials within those regions; especially given that American citizens working on Ulysses S Grant's ill-fated Oregon Trail had discovered significant amounts cf gold hidden elsewhere within Mexico – potentially opening up vast tracts Pollock County (in today's Kendall County) lying between Lafayette & Indianapolis lay exposed starting around Licking Creek beds just south/northwest OF where I-465 intersects US 36W today near present day Terre Haute - thus providing yet another avenue(s?) for settlement within our growing region! A group known variously as "The Pioneers", "Erie Company" or simply "The Colts" arrived at what would become Vincennes from Western Pennsylvania about September 1st1840 by wagon train bound for Logansport via Erie Canal then downriver until reachable water crossings near present day Wabash River Bridge about 10 miles southeast Of current day downtown Vincennes Via Pioneer Roadstead! They left behind brothers Ebenezer Scudder (a captaincy Cookstown Nanticoke Fayette Co., Penn.), Justus Metcalfe (Captain Cookstown), John Bartlett (Captain Cookstown), Solomon Eaton (Herkimer county militia sergeant 3rd class) Isaac De Pereira (Master Sergeant 2nd Class Herkimer Co.) Peter Benton & family plus many others………all tools needed notables among them…………….. George StephensonBossett surveyor&surveyor general Ulysses S Grant surveyed route traveled May 1865 but never reached site now occupied by Paintsville [sic] Park [sic] Monument also called Paintsville National Historical Park
Vincennes is a city in the U.S. state of Indiana, and the county seat of Vincennes County. The population was 54,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis–Carmel–Anderson metropolitan area. The first European to visit what is now Vincennes was an Italian explorer, Giovanni da Verrazzano, in 1510. He named it Villa Riccaforte after his friend and patron Cardinal Riccardo Carracciola (1463-1539), who had sponsored him on his journey from Rome to India. In 1674, General James Grant captured Fort Dearborn on the north bank of the White River near present day Vincennes while campaigning against the Native Americans under Chief Pontiac. For many years thereafter this location served as Indian trading post and wintering ground for French fur traders travelling up the White River Valley. In 1762, during France's War ofthe Quadruple Alliance with Great Britain, General Marquette built Fort Dearborn on top of present day Illinois National Memorial Park east of town to prevent British traders from reaching us downriver through that gap in our geography. In 1805, Vincennes became one hundred miles (160 kilometers) wide when it was divided into two counties – Posey County to the south and LaPorte County to the north – by territorial boundaries following American independence from Great Britain。 In 1837, Posey County was combined with LaPorte County to form Hancock County (). In 1871, Hancock County was divided into three parts – Hendrickson Township within LaPorte County and two other townships each within Posey and Hancock Counties – forming what is now Vincennes Township bloodstream college district No 4 which today spans all five wards in downtown Indianapolis including Notre Dame Cathedral’s campus! 1st Ward: N/A 2nd Ward: W/M/D 3rd Ward: E/N/A
