Vincennes is a city in and the county seat of Vincennes County, Indiana, United States. The population was 979 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first European settlers in what is now Vincennes were French colonists who arrived in 1674. In 1786, General Anthony Wayne founded Vincennes as a small town on the east bank of the Wabash River. The town grew rapidly due to its natural resources: coal, timber, and salt water fish ponds. In 1814, Vincennes became a state capital; it was moved to Indianapolis in 1816. In 1834, General David Wallace defeated Indian Chief Black Hawk at Battle of Little Big Horn and brought an end to Native American resistance to white settlement in central Indiana. This event helped promote development around the Wabash River Valley and increased trade with Kentucky and Illinois. By 1840, Vincennes had become one of America's most populous cities with over 100,000 residents. The growth of industry led to divisions among local political leaders over land use and taxation; this caused some prosperity while others struggled financially during the Panic of 1845-1846. During World War II, many factories were built in Vincennes by military personnel or their families for wartime production needs such as airplane plants and shipyards; these facilities produced more than two million products for American consumers alone duringWWII. However, much later when downtown businesses closed down because of competition from larger malls or suburban developments nearby (the so-called "Great Lakes City", which includes parts now known as Hammondsville/Elkhart/Lisle), many jobs disappeared within downtown Vincennes itself along with anyresidential housing units that survived into adulthood post-war outside Downtown core - all without any public assistance being given whatsoever until recently as social Services have been drastically cut back especially impacting low income citizens who are typically largest concentration within this demographic area - meaning very few people have access whatsoever currently even though there has never been an Olmsted Parks & Recreation District established specifically targetting low income citizens since title went out exclusively to large commercial developers pre-recession thru eminent domain... basically saying if you're not big money then you're not welcome here by us anymore! Today however there are grassroots efforts happening (i'm looking at you city hall) but things definitely need more focus from government folks on what they should be doing instead just sitting idly watching things happen while 99%+ goes unnoticed because we lack clout ;)

The town of Vincennes, Indiana was chartered on February 14, 1802. The population of the town increased rapidly in the early 1800s due to waves of immigrants arriving in search of a better life. In 1814, the town voted to become a city. The first Mayor of Vincennes was Nicholas S. Kelley and his term expired on December 31, 1815. The first City Council consisted of 3 members with one seat coming up for election every 2 years. On January 1, 1817, Vincennes became a state capital when it was moved from Lafayette to Vincennes following the state's ratification of the United States Constitution. On November 3, 1830, Indian Wars began in central Indiana and by December 10th had ended with most of the northern side destroyed including much property within Vincennes limits. In 1846 Anthony Wayne founded what is now Butler County and donated land near present-day Clinton Township for a county courthouse and jail which would be built as part of an expanding community called Forest Park that grew around it. The courthouse and jail were completed in 1850 and served as both until 1916 when they were replaced by the current courthouse located at 6th Street and State Road 56 (now I-65). In 1886 Wm Henson organized what is now Lake County from portions east of Vincennes also annexed into Jennings County; this formed what is now western Hendricks County proper Lake County was renamed Willoughby County after its founder on October 9th 1903 according to an act passed by Congress “To promote local autonomy” Vincennes lost its status as a city in 1924 when it merged with neighboring Indianapolis
In 1814, Vincennes had a population of only 350 residents. In 1817, the U.S. Congress approved the site for Fort Wayne and built it on land donated by the Potawatomi tribe. The fort was first manned by Native Americans in 1819 and became an important military base during the American Civil War. It was eventually demolished in 1865 and replaced with a new fortification, which is still standing today.
