In 1836, Reverend David Hendricks organized the Methodist Episcopal Church of Vincennes and served as its first pastor. In 1840, Mayor Nicholas Mayo built a brick building at 4th and Washington Streets for the city hall which he later used as his home and office until his death in 1865. The following year, Mayor George Fenton erected a wood frame building at 1st and Washington Streets for use as City Hall; this structure still stands today. On November 10, 1847, Vincennes became an incorporated village under the name of "Vincennes." On May 25, 1850-51, Village Meeting occurred at First Presbyterian Church to adopt resolutions establishing specific goals forVillage Development including fire protection (which did not happen), water supply (which did not happen),and paving roads (which did not happen). On October 15, 1861-62 General Order No 3 required all males over 21 years old living within 5 miles of any town or village to carry shotguns into that town or village without prior written consent from their respective Town Councils! This order caused much excitement throughout the community because many residents had no idea how to get around this rule! On January 2nd 1862 Colonel William Buell arrived in Indianapolis with orders from President Abraham Lincoln requiring all Union soldiers must be carrying armsat all times! Many people began panic mode when they realized this could mean trouble for them if they didn't have guns! A majority of men went about getting their guns but some Females decided to stay put and help cook dinner for their families! After eating their dinner & catching up on sleep they started packing up their belongings & headed outside towards downtown Indianapolis where they found out that everything had changed!!! They had been told that once General Order No 3 went into effect everyone would be able to buy weapons so they decided it was time to head back home again!!! After reading about what happened duringGeneral Order No 3 he decided that it wasn't right that everyone was getting new weapons while some people were going through tough times just like him!!! He quickly gathered together all of his military friends + some civilians who knew howto shoot guns & formed an ambush party making sure none of those new guys got away cleanly!!! Although it seems like it would have been easy enough given his forces size but unfortunately someone forgot to warn those New guys!!!!

In 1916, it merged with Terre Haute to form the current city. The history of Vincennes begins with French colonists who arrived in 1795 to establish a fur trading post near present-day Vincennes. They named their new settlement after Louis XIV's brother, Maurice de Vincennes. By 1800, this post had become a successful mercantile center supplying goods to both France and England. In 1807, Congress approved $10,000 for the construction of a fortification on the eastern edge of what is now Vincennes about 12 miles north of downtown (then called "the Village". Fort Wayne would later be built on this site). In 1827, when Ohio Territory was created from parts of Indiana and Illinois, part of that territory included what is now Vincennes County. On March 1st, 1828 ,VINCENNES COUNTY HELD ITS FIRST SESSION WITH A PRESIDENT AND WITNESSES UNDER THE PROVISIONS OF THE ACT OF MAY 14TH ANNO Domini 1830 . After much discussion among residents about proper procedure for holding such an event they proceeded with steps taken pursuant to law And upon ratification by all voting members elected James Brougham as first county recorder & John Jardine as justiceof peace
