Vincennes, Indiana is a small town located in the U.S. state ofIndiana. The population was 2,859 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Vincennes, IN Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area now occupied by Vincennes was first settled by the Potawatomi Indians in 1795-96. In 1818, Vincennes was incorporated as a township under the name of Indiansburg Township and remained so until it became a city on January 1, 1907. On July 16, 1853, David Wilcox and others purchased 463 acres (1 km²) of land east of present-day Vincennes from Nicholas Flournoy for $5 per acre (.0004 per km²). This tract later became known as "Flournoy's Swamp". When this purchase was made, flounder fishing was an important industry in what is now central Indiana; however, today only a few floaters may be found on this site. The town of Vincennes began to form on this land around 1800 when John Wesley Powell started ranching there and numerous other settlers followed suit over time including Nathaniel Lyon who donated land for a canal that never got built. In 1864–65 two rifles were used in an attempted robbery at night at the home of Senator Oliver Cowdery which led to his indictment on four counts of criminal attempt to prevent passage or proper government function (a precursor to modern day terrorism). In 1865 he resigned from Congress after being indicted but continued to write influential articles during his suspension from office due to his conviction). A plaque near where he lived recalls Cowdery’s visit: “On July 16th year 1865 an attempt was made upon the life of Senator Cowdery by three armed men while he slept within doors – this unfortunate event caused him great sorrow and embarrassed our country during its most critical hour” . The city ordinance dated November 5th 1889 gave citizens OF ALL SIZES access to sidewalks with one exception: no person under eighteen years old shall be allowed on public sidewalks without some kind of identification such as a driver’s license or passport! In 1894 Wm Hite organized what would become known as The Indianapolis Colts football team which played their first game against Lake County rivals Stroudsburgoctors on October 15th that same year
