In 1814, when Vincennes was founded as a small village in Indiana Territory, it was the only permanent settlement on the eastern frontier of what would become the United States. The first settler in Vincennes was Nicholas Bourne. Bourne donated land to the village for a Methodist church and cemetery. In 1828, Pierre Charles L'Enfant designed and built the first public building in Vincennes: a log cabin used as an schoolhouse and post office. Vincennes grew rapidly during the 1830s due to its strategic location: on both sides of Uniontown Creek (now known as Southeastern Indianapolis), it could watch Indian raids while providing supplies and protection to settlers living near Fort Wayne. During this time period, also saw increased trade with Canada because of new routes opening up through western Michigan via Lake Erie. By 1840, Vincennes had a population of 3,000 residents and had acquired several cannons from Fort Dearborn arsenal. The town also began growing into an agricultural center thanks to its fertile soil and access to water resources nearby. During his tenure as mayor from 1848-1849 (a position he held concurrent with that of county treasurer), John Pugh developed what is now called Pugh Park within present-day downtown Vincennes – one of America's earliest city parks . In 1850–1851, after becoming president of Purdue University – one of America's largest universities at that time – Abraham Lincoln visited Vincennes for part of his campaign trail before entering Washington D.C.. On November 5th 1860 during American Civil War - days after General George McClellan sacked Fort Sumter - General Grant marched into town accompanied by Ulysses S Grant's cavalry under Lt.-Colonel Samuel Fisk - who successfully negotiated surrender terms for Confederate General Robert Easley - then delivered President Abraham Lincoln’s proclamation ordering all southern states except Virginia to declare secession from the United States . After Lincoln’s inauguration on January 15th 1861 African Americans were banned from voting in Indiana until 1865 . On September 11th 1863 Union troops burned down Exeter Baptist Church which led to over 100 arrests across Indiana including many black men . In 1865 white supremacists killed three black people at Comstock Lick Springs park just outside present day Lafayette
