After being annexed by Indianapolis in 1907, Valparaiso experienced significant economic decline during World War II due to military stationed here which destroyed many of the businesses within the city limits. The city was founded in 1824 by two Danish immigrants, Lars Christensen and his wife Jensine. Valparaiso became an important center for education and industry during the 19th century. After experiencing a period of growth following World War II, Valparaiso experienced another period of growth in the 1960s and 1970s thanks to its role as a center for aerospace manufacturing. Today, Valparaiso is one of the most economically active cities in central Indiana. The city has accessed many federal programs that have helped it grow such as economic development assistance from the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), access to financial resources from its local banks, support from local businesses through a business park program administered by the Chamber of Commerce, and contributions from local taxpayers through unique tax systems that have made Valparaiso one of the most affluent cities in central Indiana. Valparaiso is a city in the U.S. state of Indiana and the county seat of Posey County. The population was 13,021 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis metropolitan area. Valparaiso has been a center for education since its founding in 1847, when it became one of two Methodist churches in Indiana, along with Fort Wayne. In 1890, Valparaiso became an industrial town and Focus on Science and Technology Center (FAST) was established as one of the first large technology parks in America. Today, Valparaiso's economy revolves around research and development for pharmaceuticals, defense contractor products, food processing industries, agricultural production and services such as home health aide services. In 1847, Methodist Reverend Samuel Hays founded Valparaiso Academy to educate young men in arts and sciences. He believed that by training these men they could contribute to their community and countrymen better than if they only looked out for themselves. By 1860, there were over 100 students at Valparaiso Academy! Reverend Hays also started physical education classes to improve school integration which helped create local football teams (the "Aggies" until 1902), baseball teams (the "Moccasins" from 1903-1906), wrestling teams (1892), gymnastics classes (1896), and dance instruction programs which continue today at Valley View High School & Cultural Arts Museum (VVH&AM). The town began milling flour from local wheat fields beginning in 1869 after Reverend Hays' purchase of an early corn grinder from John McNamara & Sons Ltd.. The first store opened in 1870 near what is now Main Street with 2 rooms totaling 12 feet wide by 20 feet long inside a -4 foot deep well created by blasting away a hillock underlying the village site! The first post office opened on Valentine's Day 1872 with 3 residents serviceable! Mr Fenton ran J D Wetherspoon’s beer shop starting about 1886 until he closed it about 1889 due to Prohibition!! In 1893 Mr Fenton built the first grocery store east of main street which still stands today called “The Gourmet Shop” In 1896 Mrs Lillie Inderlich started teaching school 8 days a week outside on what is now First Avenue between Third Street North & Fourth Street South just north of present day downtown Valparaiso! She did this while living upstairs above her father’s tailor shop next door! Mrs Inderlich also served as our first female teacher when district No 1 schools were required by law back then!!! From 1896-1920 Mrs Inderlich taught many different subjects including Bible Church class instruction before she retired from school full time effective September 1920!!!!! After World War 1 we had 10 children graduating high school each year but due to prohibition during prohibition years we stopped having graduation ceremonies!!! We finally graduated all our seniors using secretarial courses offered through Purdue University Extension Department!! Then we put together some pictures etcetera but never achieved full success again like earlier efforts………..until recent times!!!!!
