Valparaiso is a city in the U.S. state of Indiana, and the seat of Kosciusko County. The population was 37,569 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Valparaiso Peninsula, on the banks of the Porter River. The first settlers in what is now Valparaiso were farmers who arrived around 1811. In 1847, General James Ketchum renamed it after his victory over Mexican forces at Palo Alto Hill. The first school in Valparaiso was built in 1851 by educators Amos Kendall and Mrs. Prentiss Griggs (the mother of Abraham Lincoln). Valley View High School opened in 1909 as one of four high schools operated by Purdue University's predecessor institutions–Indiana Normal School (now Hoosier Hall), Indiana State Teachers' College (now Old Main), and Indiana Wesleyan College–in response to a proposal from then-Purdue President David Starr Kerr to build a university town near West Lafayette where students could more easily access education opportunities outside their homes. In 1932, Purdue merged with Indiana University to form an institution that would be larger than either institution had ever been before: Purdue University– Indianapolis Valparaiso became an independent city on December 1, 1959 when it joined neighboring Elkhart County as part of a merge process approved by the United States Congress following passage of USignature Act 9251 (). On January 1st 1970, residents voted 98% in favor of annexing neighboring Gosnells Township into Valparaiso City Limits (). On November 3rd 1992 voters followed suit with a vote for annexation that passed with 58% support (). The new city limits include all but two blocks of downtown Valparauso () while keeping portions close to existing neighborhoods such as North Park (), Midtown (), South Park (), Broad Ripple Village (), Eastgate Plaza (), and Woodruff Square (). The annexed area totals almost 5 square miles (.2 km²) compared to just under 2 square miles (.8 km²) within City Limits .
