George Washington Carver, the noted American scientist and educator, was born in Valparaiso, Indiana on October 10th 1875. He attended Purdue University where he earned his B.S. degree in 1904. He then went on to earn his M.D. from the University of Michigan in 1907 and did pediatric surgery there until 1911 when he moved to Atlanta, Georgia to join the faculty of Emory University as a professor of Pediatrics and then as head of the school from 1923-1929. While at Emory he also served as President of the American Academy of Pediatrics from 1921-1924 and again from 1927-1929; he also was a member of The Academy of Sciences (Washington D.C.) from 1915-1921 and 1935-1945. In 1928 Carver became Director of Research for The National Research Council which became known later as The National Academies after its passage by Congress in 1946 giving it independence from the Senate; Carver resigned in 1949 but remained a licensed physician until his death on December 14th 1954 at age 85 years old. Carver is most famous for developing soil amendments called “carve” which are used today all over the world to improve crop yields; however, his work with guns began before that time with his invention of an air pump specifically designed for handgun cleaning which he patented in 1906. Gun targets were first developed by Major General Israel Putnam who patented an improved design under the name “Putnam’s Pistol TARGET” in 1865 while serving as Superintendent of Public Instruction for New York City; this design featured target turrets that could be pulled down so that shooters could clean their weapons without ever having to leave their seats! It was only after Louis de Girardin published an article about Putnam’s Target designs during 1899 that someone finally came up with a successful design - this being De Girardin’s original “Pistol TARGET MODEL 1A” which featured brass sighting posts instead of iron sights and a metal frame! This model quickly gained popularity among shooters all over Europe who beganto use it against military targets such as artillery batteries, cavalry charges etc.; it even saw limited use within America during World War I due to availability issues!
