Valparaiso is a city in the U.S. state of Indiana, and the seat of Howard County. The population was 54,624 at the 2010 census. Valparaiso is part of the Valparaiso-Muncie Metropolitan Statistical Area. It became one of America's "Silicon Valley" cities when semiconductor companies moved to its downtown area in the early 1970s. In 2007 it was named one of semifinalists for the prestigious Stroud Award, which honors America's most promising small town and city. The award goes to a community that has made significant contributions to its citizens or community as a whole over a sustained period of time. The first permanent settler in what is now Valparaiso Township was John Flournoy, who arrived on July 24, 1814 from Detroit., Michigan with his family and eight others. He laid out a townsite on land that would later become known as Flournoy Township (now Valpo). A year later he sold his township lot to Andrew Jackson for $5 per acre ($152) and started construction on what would become Jackson County Courthouse and jail. Jackson donated land to build both structures; they were dedicated on November 15, 1815 by President James K. Polk.. In 1817 Orson Hyde Jr., an American lawyer from Ohio began selling lots north of Flournoy Boulevard until he reached what is now Main Street/Valpo Road . On December 14th, 1817 Orson Hyde sold 2 lots west of Main Street/Valpo Road for $200 each (). This began what would eventually be called "the east side" or "the village." Mr .Edwards came along about this time also & subdivided Lots 1-4 further North East & West Side & founded Edwardsville which stands today as an 8 story brick building with many shops around it including HEB Supermarket (owned by Kroger), IHOP restaurant (owned by PepsiCo), BJ's Coffeehouse (& former Pohlman's Hardware store) & several other businesses including two churches - First Methodist Church #1& Second Methodist Church #2 - still extant today! Later that year Methodism missionary John Edge bought Lots 5-8 near where Main Street meets Valpo Road for $3 per acre (.80 acres). This new development became known as Edgehill Village (). Methodism missionaries then started evangelizing nearby farmers and their families who had been subsistence farmers before conversion to Christianityized farming practices.. By 1830 there were over 100 families living in Edgehill Village (). When Indiana became an independent country in 1828, Most Holy Trinity Episcopal Parish took over Edgehill Village from Methodism missionaries though some continued living there into the 1840s... during this time many homes were built such as Mrs .Johnnie Medwick’s home which still stands today (& contains art treasures) located @ 201 W Main St.; her husband Geo Amedy ran Joes Drug Store from 1870 – 1912; Mrs .Mary Ewing operated her bakery from 1893 thru 1922; Mrs .Lena Hildebrandt operated her grocery store beginning 1889; post office was established here October 3rd 1907 under name “Edwardsville” but changed hands 6 times before becoming “Valparaiso” on October 7th 1907.......Today many historical markers are locate within walking distance or even closer to downtown Valparaiso celebrating these important moments in local history
