When Terre Haute, Indiana was founded in 1837, the area was a vast open prairie. The only way to get around was on horseback or on foot. The settlers were pioneers who had to be very efficient with their time and resourcefulness when it came to finding food and shelter. One of the earliest methods settlers used for communication was through gunfire. Terre Haute is a city in and the county seat of Terre Haute County, Indiana, United States. The population was 71,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Terre Haute were French traders who called it "Hautes-Alpes" because of the high mountain peaks in that area. On December 7, 1795, Captain James Kapp and his party from the American Revolution's Third Regiment (also known as "The Pioneers") journeyed upriver from Fort Dearborn to explore what Indian Territory lay beyond present day Terre Haute. They discovered a large open country lying east of present day downtown and named this area for Mount Vernon on November 11, 1795. In 1814, John Tipton founded an agricultural settlement around what is today Northwest corner of First Street and Meridian Avenue NW which he named Prairie du Chien (later renamed Terre Haute). In 1815 Wm Hartsfield opened a store at East Main Street and North Meridian Avenue NW which became one of the largest businesses in town. This store was followed by two more stores within two years – Jno Fenton’s Store on West Main Street in 1817 and Ephraim Baldwin’s Store on South Meridian Avenue NW in 1819 – all of which made Terra Haute one of America’s leading commerce towns during its early days. In 1820 Jno Fenton built a sawmill on Whitewater River just south of town which soon became one of America’s largest sources for woodchips used to make machine parts. In 1830 Abraham Lincoln visited Terra Haute while campaigning for President; he spoke at Northwest corner first street & north meridian avenue nw about “a new nation upon these shores” before leaving for Washington D C.. The Lincoln family frequently toured local farms during their Presidency; when they did not take public appearances they would often ride overland to nearby West Bend or Anaconda where they would spend the night repairing farm machinery or visiting friends until back home late morning next day.. After his death , his wife Anna kept house here until 1860 when she moved into her own house on Third Street near today's State Fairgrounds.. In 1865 Union General Ulysses S Grant arrived with troops marching through central Indiana looking for Confederate General Joseph Johnston; soaring above TerreHaute as they passed overhead was Signal Corps' Vulture Twitter account - note 5:30am CST July 9th photo! A post office has been located at Northwest corner First St./NMeridian Ave NW since March 1, 1865; it had been established under Act 509 (1862) entitled "An act to establish a Postoffice at Terra Haute". A postmaster general has been located here continuously since May 6th 1862 by order #27892 filed under section 3(b)(1) OF THE ACT OF JULY 9TH 1862 . mail processing began here on October 15th 1870 after being moved from Aledo . They also had noise cancelling capabilities so that you could still hear what was happening around you while shooting safely and comfortably. Eventually, all types of shooter earmuffs became quite common among professional firearm owners across America – even though they may not be used by everyone every day!

Terre Haute is a city in the U.S. state of Indiana and the county seat of Terre Haute County. The population was 28,813 at the 2010 census. The city is located on the southern edge of Hoosier Hills, about 20 miles (32 km) north-northwest of Indianapolis and 50 miles (80 km) northeast of Chicago. The original settlement in what is now Terre Haute was called Mayfield by French traders in the 17th century, after their victory over the Native Americans at Battle of Mayfield Field near present-day Portsmouth, Ohio. The first European settlers were farmers who arrived around 1800 and named their land "Hoosiers" for Hoosier Indian chief Black Hawk. A post office was established at Mayfield in 1836, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1892. In 1834, Daniel Boone settled nearby what is now downtown Terre Haute with his family as part of an effort to start a new community that would be away from Indian hostilities. He named his new town "Booneville". It became the capital ofIndiana Territory on April 14, 1835 when Territorial Governor James Kapp recommended that it be moved from Vincennes because there were no stores or schools available within its boundaries- this decision helped establish Indiana's permanent capital city status. In 1840, Indiana General George Armstrong Custer fought during the Mexican–American War at Peoria River Bridge near modern day Terre Haute; Custer's brigade reportedly stopped just short of crossing but lost all its horses due to hostile Apache Indians nearby. 9 years later on October 26th 1865 a Confederate force under General John Buell attacked Fort Harrison near present day Terre Haute while Union forces were engaged against General Robert E Lee's army outside Richmond Virginia; though successful initially they sufferedheavy losses soon afterwards due to disease among their ranks which finally surrendered on November 11th 1865 after 8 days long siege culminating with over 100 fatalities including Boones entire garrison including Captains David Wilcox and Nathaniel Banks On February 12th 1871 Charles Evans Hughes became Mayor succeeding Salmon Peebles following much public outcry over lack of proper sanitation facilities being provided for poor black residents living along Railroad Avenue known as " Slumtown ". Hughes' term saw many improvements such as better lighting throughout town including illuminated snow plows which helped clean upDuring World War II both TerreHaute Army Ammunition Plant (now White Sands Missile Range) and American Mfg Co plant produced munitions used by US war efforts
On October 15, 1890, Terre Haute became the city of Indiana's capital. The move came about because at that time the state of Indiana was divided into two parts - the central part went to Indianapolis and the eastern part went to Terre Haute. In 1892, when the state was re-divided into three parts, Terre Haute became the third part of Indiana.
homicide detective danielle lopez and her partner, johnny were out on a call when they received a call in the early hours of the morning. upon arriving at the scene, they found 19 year old shooter jonathan rogers with multiple gunshot wounds to his head. According to reports, he had been shooting at someone else before coming across the detectives. leslie brownell was also shot and is currently in surgery. both detectives are currently listed in serious condition at local hospital.
