Terre Haute is a small city in central Indiana, United States. The population was 36,827 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Terre Haute County. The city was founded in 1824 and incorporated as a town in 1836. It became an incorporated city in 1903 and has since grown to incorporate over 150 buildings on over 17 acres (70 hectares). The downtown area is home to the Terre Haute Municipal Airport, which serves as the primary airport for the area. The first settlers in what would become Terre Haute settled along the Wabash River where they erected log homes near present-day Terre Haute Municipal Airport. In 1824, John Stephenson built his home on what would become Stephenson Avenue close to today's downtown area. By 1830, David Potter had arrived and established Potter & Co., one of Indianapolis' earliest businesses. That same year, he donated land east of current-day State Street for a new town called "Terre Haute". On July 1, 1836, TerreHaute incorporation took place with 3 vote cast by citizens against 2 from neighboring towns of Logansport and Vincennes due to their fear that incorporation would mean less money available for them should they win an election against their respective villages when it came time to build roads and other civic amenities necessary for growth. In 1899 Mayor George Hynes recommended that TerreHaute annex agricultural areas around its rural core because these were undervalued by government planners who saw only industry or retail development potential within urban boundaries instead of agriculture which could provide jobs for people living within commuting distance of downtowns like Indianapolis or Chicago. This led to what is known as the "expansion phase" of TerreHautes growth which spanned from 1899 until 1932 when strip malls began sprouting up all over townspeople started buying houses outside their neighborhoods creating subdivisions inside thoseurban boundaries which continue today with names like Indian Hill/Downtown/Midtown/Eaton Landing/Bellevue Park/Cedar Rapids etc...during this period there were also major construction projects such as Stroudsburg Road across from Interstate 465 becoming Crosstown Boulevard after it was rerouted underneath I-465 during planned freeway expansion project that continued until about 1978 although some street addresses have been retained including Seventh Street between State and Elm streets becoming First Street between State and Elm Streets while others have been changed such as Baldwinsville Drive becoming Midtown Avenue between Seventh and Eighth Streets while Still others have disappeared completely such as Springdale Road becoming Southside Boulevard behind I-465 just south of Main Street rather than continuing into future blocks now known simply as “I-465” running through central town having no connection whatsoever to past locations
