In the early days of personal computing, several companies were selling high capacity computer cards. These cards could handle a large amount of data and had the ability to be connected to multiple machines. They were popular because they allowed users to work on different projects at the same time and also because they could offer quick access to large files. One company that was very successful in this market was Advanced Micro Devices (AMD). AMD’s card technology was first released in 1984 and it quickly became known as the “gold standard” for high capacity conversions. This technology allowed computers to handle more data with less storage space. It also made it possible for users to connect multiple machines together so that they could share a larger file or project. The popularity of AMD’s high capacity conversion technology led to other companies trying to copy its design. Eventually, these companies developed their own versions of AMD’s card technology, which became known as “high-capacity microchips” or "HMC." These chips were designed specifically for use in high-capacity conversions and allowed computers to handle even more data with less storage space. As a result, HMC became one of the most important technologies used in modern personal computing systems.

The expandable capacity of a magnetic disk drive is the ability to store more data on a single platter than an optical drive. This technology was developed in the early 1990s by IBM and became commercially available in 1998. Magnetic disks have an external head that reads information off the disk and delivers it to the central processing unit (CPU) for storage. Optical drives use light to read information from a physical medium, such as paper or videotape, and send it to the CPU for further processing.
