The town was founded by French colonists in 1795 as a post on the Western Frontier of what is now Indiana. As more settlers arrived, they began to names their towns after plants or animals from their local environment. In 1827, John Nicholson renamed the town Terre Haute after himself and his wife Hannah Palmer as part of a larger settlement around this area. By 1830, all but one of the original families had left for other parts of Indiana or Missouri due to hard times during this time period. However, many residents still lived in Terre Haute until it was annexed by Indianapolis in 1871 when it became an incorporated municipality with its own government. In 1861, two years after Indianapolis annexed Terre Haute into its municipal limits (itself only 2 years old), Mayor John Hodge submitted a resolution to annex neighboring communities – Arcola and Stony Creek – which were located on both sides of current day White River Road between Interstate 465 and I-465 Business Loop east of downtown Indianapolis and also included parts of today's Dearborn Heights neighborhood east of White River Road just south of Powers Avenue/Utopia Parkway interchange located within today's Indianapolis Central Business District boundaries (territory then including much present-day Arlington Heights). This annexation proposal failed to gain approval from either the City Council or Mayor Hodge but saw action later that year when it was approved by Judge James Wickersham who ruled that these parcels lay within existing city limits rather than annexing them anew because they were considered rural areas without any potential business development potential outside of downtown Indy. The reversion ordinance allowing cities to revert back if annexation proposals are not accepted put pressure on municipalities to annex more rural areas so that overall there would be more contiguous territory within their borders for economic development purposes; eventually this process led to Howard County being formed from portions OFTerreaHauteINdiana in 1972 outgrowthofthe mergingof several small counties at that time directly resultantfromthis ordinance.(See maps attached) Newspapers such as The Star-Dispatch published articles highlighting how expanding metropolitan populations were starting to drive up costs for goods necessary for everyday living like groceries while reducing availability for smaller villages near large urban centers like Indianapolis where prices for goods common enough did not increase much above thoseuppetrope prices while quality declined significantly over time despite efforts by small village merchants trying to compete against big box stores; ultimately this trend contributed towards increased demand among suburbanites seeking provides they could not find closer to home( See map attached)). By 1975 almost all businesses closed down within 5 miles radius due to lack thereof replacement products or customers following tiered pricing system where bigger boxes got higher priced items while others like grocery stores received lower priced items making it difficult for small villages without high technology capabilities or marketing abilities competing against larger companies simply unable afford such expansive packaging sizes(see map attached)). In 1978 another ordinance changed pricing regulations which allowed stores open late night instead off hours previously closing at 10 pm; however store closings continued until 1984 due future ordinances limiting late night hours especially outside central Business Districts resultinginincreased competition among retailers inside central Business Districts). Today typical store hours are 12am - 8pm except on Sundays when they close at 6pm ); however some stores remain open late into the night .
