In 1859, a group of men from Illinois decided to set up a trading post in what is now downtown Terre Haute. They named their post Fort Dearborn after General John Dearborn, who had won fame during the American Civil War. The traders at Fort Dearborn developed a strong trade with Native Americans living in what is now central Indiana. By 1865,Terre Haute had reached its peak as an industrial town and its population topped five thousand people. However, by 1870s industry had declined and the city’s economy was mostly based on agriculture. In that year, however, something amazing happened: A new factory called Armstrong Paper Company arrived in town and began producing paper products such as envelopes and tickets. This company became one of the largest employers in town and helped revive downtown TerreHaute as an economic center again.
