In 1814, General Scott's army passed through this area on its way to invade Canada and burned down the French missions along the way. This event led to an increase in settler activity as people realized that this region had potential for agricultural production. By 1827, over 60 families had relocated to Terre Haute from Illinois and other states during President James K. Polk's "Faggressive Policy" which aimed to promote American settlement throughout Northwest India Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (a loose federation of Tamil Nadu provinces). The arrival of these new settlers created many social and economicchanges within the town limits which can still be seen today. In 1829, when it was discovered that coal could be mined in this area, TerreHaute became one of America's first coal-mining towns. Mines continued to be located here until around 1920 when all but two were closed due to competition from more recent mines near Louisville and Dayton (in Ohio). Coal mining played an important role in shaping earlyTerreHaute economy with jobs being provided both inside and outside of town; however, by 1930 only a single mine remained open while most others closed or merged with other companies over that period. After World War II major industry shifted away from mining into engineering and manufacturing with much spinningoff into small businesses; however some large firms such as Allied Signal continue operations right up until today including their primary facility on Main Street known as “The Factory” where large parts are still made today including turbines for power plants across America

They named their land "Providence" after their patron saint, but no structures were erected until 1803 when General Nicholas Troup donated land for a courthouse and jail. A small school was built on that site in 1805 by Reverend George Catlin and Brothers. In 1814, James Kapp bought 1/4 acre (0.18 km²) of land from Drury Lane Associates for $200 compensation for being forced to leave his home near Highlandtown due to Indian attacks during the War of 1812. He founded Kapp & Co., Merchants Warehouse and Bank with this property which became known as "the old bank". During the 1850s,Terre Haute experienced rapid growth as waves of new immigrants arrived seeking opportunities in what was then an agricultural society dominated by Native American tribes such as the Potawatomi and Shawnee nations. The town's first school was opened in 1855 by Rev John Fenton with fifteen students; it closed several years later because there wasn't enough money to keep it open without tuition fees. In 1860,TerreHaute welcomed its first post office when Wm Hargrave established Post Office No 3 on Main Street east of Court House Square; it continued serving residents until 1951 when it moved to its present location at 1116 E 4th St.. The city's population reached over 200,000 by 1860 but declined rapidly during the late 19th century due to loss of jobs caused by eastern railroad construction along the Ohio River Valley. However, growth resumed around World War II thanks to increased military spending and burgeoning industry in nearby Hammondsville and Lafayette which had been acquired through annexation by Terre Haute between 1914 and 1916; these developments led to increased employment within the city limits and contributed significantly to its current population size today。 In 1940-41 with war looming large upon America many people left towns like TerreHaute moving into other parts of America or abroad where they could find work( like Germany).
