The Terre Haute metropolitan area has a population of 309,569. It is located on the eastern edge of Indianapolis metropolitan area and forms part of the larger Bloomington-Normal Micropolitan Statistical Area. The original town site that became Terre Haute was laid out in 1824 by Nicholas Long and other pioneers who came from Kentucky to try to find a new home for themselves after being driven out of Kentucky bythe Seminole Wars. The town grew quickly because it was near water resources and transportation was available only by boat or wagon. By 1830, Terre Haute had a school and Prosperity Canal had been built connecting it with neighboringValparaiso via a bridge over the White River. In 1833, General Anthony Wayne founded what would eventually become Marion County as part of his drive to take control of all Indian Territory west of the Ohio River. In 1835, he named this new county after himself because he believed that it would be easier to administer if there were one central government rather than many individual counties. In 1839, when New Albany became an independent city within Marion County, General Wayne offered its citizens land in what is now TerreHaute Township in order to create an incorporated village which they accepted without any problem because they felt that their township should have been named after them instead ofGeneralWayne(). During the American Civil War (1861-1865), both Union and Confederate forces passed through or camped near TerreHaute on their way westward into Indiana during 1862 and 1863 respectively. During this time, most business activity took place along White River Road just outside present day downtown TerreHaute limits although some buildings still stand today such as Mathers Opera House which once accommodated up to 350 people for stage performances during winter months; additional businesses located along White River Road include The Buckmaster Store (now demolished), Howard & Wells Drug Store (now closed), Roper’s Feeding Station (now defunct) and Fenton’s Ford Gabrielshoe Shoes Factory (now closed). On July 4th 1861 while Confederate General Thomas Jarratt was encamped nearby at Logansport Illinois lost his supply train due to thunderstorms conditions about 25 miles south east of downtown TerreHaute; several men from local Temperance Society volunteered to go sisterwise look for supplies so Jarratt could continue with his campaign without interruption thereby fulfilling one side effectof America’s “gospel president” Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address three years earlier! Little did these brave men know that within days they would be returning home with talesof heroism surrounding their mission! Some interesting facts about this period in our history include: – On October 10th 1865 Union Major George Armstrong Custer died while riding in commandruin Battle Creek Campaign Missouri; two days later President Abraham Lincoln issued Proclamation No 1 commanding all Ulysses S Grant’s troops east bank o fMissouri River notto attack enemy forces encountered between Kaskaskie Heightsand Hellenistic Hillsas long as no property damage or casualty occurred.– After Andrew Johnson was elected President on November 3rd 1865 Genl Pembroke Butler surrendered Columbus GeorgiaHaving successfully defended Atlanta against Sherman's march through southern Georgia four months prior United States Marines under Commodore Matthew Perry stormed ashore September 15th 1865 at anchor off Dahlgren Harbor seizing 2 thousand prisoners including Generals Robert E Lee and Stonewall Jackson
