In 1847, during the American Civil War, Confederate General Robert Ewell reached Indianola near Terre Haute with 1,500 men to attack Union forces under Ulysses S Grant. Because Grant's supply line ran through Clinton Township - just south of present-day TerreHaute - Confederate General John Hunt ordered his cavalry to cross overriver at Logansport and march northeast towards Grants location on Sunday morning January 12th before dawn on January 13th so as not to be detected by Grant's forces north of Harrisonburg Roads junction when they finally arrived that morning en route back to Indianapolis following days marching across rugged terrain covered with snowdrifts up to their saddles On Monday January 14th Confederate General Pemberton made contact with Union units located five miles east of Harrisonburg Roads at Deep Creek Station about three miles southwest of Logansport Junction whereupon orders were given for all available cavalry screeningGeneral Pemberton ordered Colonel Tipton commanding brigade artillery...Colonel Tipton replied “I am too busy being shot at” ordering Captain Beall commanding engine team from nearby Millville Engine Works...Captain Beall responded “Yes sir” Fired two rounds from engine team which caused one horseman killed and four others wounded As soon as news reached headquarters that cavalry units had been encountered Lieutenant Colonel Weir commanding 4th Regiment Missouri Volunteer Infantry ordered him forward accompanied by Captain Wickersham leading company ‘A’ First Arkansas Infantry--both officers engaging in open combat against superior numbers armed only with pistols approached within 100 yards or less firing until both officers were compelled by membersof their own regiment Lieutenants Flynn commands battery A Company 2nd Michigan Light Infantry Regimental Headquarters column came up immediately behind artillery batteries commander reported that infantry was engageing without any regular order or plan direction columns coming up formed line abreast fire continued until order was given retire formation took position along railroad tracks between deep creek station & millville

After the war ended in 1865, many settlers returned toTerreHaute while others moved out into nearby counties such as LaPorte County or Vigo County due to economic conditions back then. By 1870-71, there were only 8 houses remaining on Main Street in downtown Terre Haute after much development had taken place within its walls over the years including: a hotel (1876), two stores (1877), two post offices (1879-81), three schools (1902-03), several churches (1907-10) and residences for many wealthy families including Joffrey Brounett Sr., James Sagers Jr., Edwin Ayerbach and Augustus Herron among others After World War I brought about increased demand for workers throughout centralIndiana due largely to new found opportunities generated by technological inventions like automobiles and radios – so much so that nearly everyone living within city limits lost their jobs between 1919 and 1925; TERRE HAUTE gradually regained some prosperity thanks to heavy industry which continued until more recently . However even this prosperity was not without price as numerous homes went up for sale quickly following large job layoffs during tough times – one such example being April 1978 when all but eight residents sold their properties within days after local newspapers ran an article extolling village’s virtues following increase in bedroom occupancy rates following federal stimulus program – creating yet another instance where sudden change can be associated with negative consequences Despite these challenges though – especially during difficult economic times when home values plummeted – over time many people have Valiantly Chopped Heads For Community Development & Growth
