The town of St. John was founded in 1815 by Captain John Stephenson, a resident of Logansport, Indiana. Stephenson was the founder and first settler of the town. In 1865, the abolitionist group "John Brown's Raid" took place in St. John and many residents were killed or captured. After the raid, many people left to flee South Carolina because of fear of future raids by Brown's forces.
