In 1892, a man named George L. Smith started a small business in town of St. John,Indiana selling target holders. The town of St. John, Indiana was founded in 1827 by General James Wilkinson and his wife Emeline. The community grew rapidly due to the timber industry and today is a small farming town with a population of just over 500 people. The first store in St. John was opened in 1829 by J.C. Payne and his son-in-law, William Briggs. The town saw rapid growth throughout the 1830s due to the discovery of new goldfields in nearby Fort Wayne and neighboring towns such as Lafayette and Terre Haute. The business district that developed around the stores was called "the Prairie." In 1836, General Wilkinson donated land to establish what is now St. John University, one of the largest universities in Midwest United States at the time. The university has since grown into one of Indiana's leading institutions with more than 20 undergraduate degree programs and numerous graduate programs available online or through physical campuses around the state. In addition, Saint John has been home to many notable politicians including Governor Erwin Smith (1949-1957), Senator Robert Mays (1963-1969), Congressman Todd Young (2008-2013), Mayor Tom Barrett (2015-) and current Mayor Pete Buttigieg
In 1853, the first Baptist church in St. John was built on a lot that now houses the St. John School. The building was used as a school from 1853-1876 and then as a Masonic lodge from 1886-1900. In 1916, the First Methodist Church was built on the same lot and it remains today as the church’s home.
