The name of St. John is believed to come from a saint who was martyred in the 6th century AD. In 1892, when the first Catholic church in this area was built, the priest who served there named it after St. John of Damascus, an early Syrian convert to Christianity. The current church, built in 1907-08, stands on a hill overlooking downtown and is one of the most recognizable buildings in all of Indiana. St. John's Parish began services on July 1, 1892 at a small chapel located on High Street below Market Square. At that time only Catholics lived in this part of town and services were conducted by lay ministers from nearby churches. For many years services were held every other Saturday morning except for Christmas and Easter which were held on Wednesday mornings because Sunday worship would have required too much street space. On December 4, 1903, construction began on what would become the current church building which cost $7000 dollars to build and was finished within five months! During its construction process many religious denominations offered their congratulations including Methodists and Baptists who had also donated money for the project; however, only Catholicism offered congratulations! The new church quickly became popular with both Catholics and Protestants alike due to its beautiful architecture and large size. In 1951Pope Pius XII dedicated the new basilica which seats 2222 people making it one of the largest churches in North America! The renovations that took place during that time included adding a glass ceiling (the first ever installed in an American cathedral), renovation of all interior spaces as well as exterior changes including adding a brand new roofline and extensive landscaping around the grounds.. Today St. John's Church remains an important part of Indianapolis' cultural landscape with its beautiful architecture & large size! It continues to be used by both Catholics & Protestants alike for religious services as well as functions such as weddings & other events!
Pope Pius XII convened the Second Vatican Council in1962 to modernize the Catholic Church. After its final sessions, Pope Paul VI appointed John XXIII as the new leader of the Church. John XXIII's first term was marked by great change and progress within the Catholic Church, including a reformation of ecclesiastical law. New programs were instituted such as social welfare and theological study. In 1968, John XXIII died after a long illness and was succeeded by his brother, Benedict XVI. Benedict XVI has been a leader in implementing many of the changes made during John XXIII's reign into Catholic doctrine and practice.
