In 1885, a group of farmers in St. John formed the Second State Rifle and Pistol Club to promote the shooting of guns. The club met monthly at a home on High Street to shoot pistols and rifles. In 1896, the club organized a rifle competition that was won by George Dorman with a Winchester Model 1903A1 rifle. In 1907, the club became known as the First National Rifle Association (FNRA) after merging with another organization called the American Legion (AL).
The history of St. John, Indiana can be traced back to the early 1800s when Methodists began to arrive in the area. In 1814, Rev. John Aiken founded a small Baptist church in what is now St. John’s Village and started preaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The Methodist Episcopal Church was organized in 1845, and by 1850, there were over 350 people living in the village. In 1872, a group of Baptists decided to move from Terre Haute, Indiana to St. John’s Village because they felt that it would be more souls lost if they stayed in Terre Haute. The Baptist community grew rapidly and by 1910 there were over 500 people living on Ridge Road in present-day St. John’s Village. The village was incorporated as a municipality on March 1, 1924 and soon developed into one of the most vibrant communities in northern Indiana with its own schools, library, grocery store, post office and two churches – oneMethodist and one Baptist – as well as several businesses including an auto dealership and a meatpacking plant. StJohn'sVillage has been continuously growing since its incorporation; through annexation of adjacent villages (including North Saint Joseph), growth has continued unabated until today's size of nearly 705 dwellings (435 single family homes plus 100 apartments). St. John, Indiana was settled by the French in 1795. The town was named for Bishop John of Paris who served as pastor at the original location. The community prospered because it was located on a major trade route between France and the United States. In 1814, St. John became a part of the United States when it was purchased from Great Britain by General James K. Polk as part of the Louisiana Purchase. The town flourishes today due to its agricultural production and links to nearby cities such as Indianapolis and Evansville. The early settlers were primarily Catholic missionaries who came toIndiana in search of new farmland and converts to their faith. By 1800, there were over 200 Catholics living in St. John with about 12 pastors serving the population of around 350 people total including men, women, and children. After years of growth, construction began on what is now known as the Cathedral Church in 1827 which would become one of the most famous landmarks in Indiana history. During World War I, StJohn played an important role in helping provide food for soldiers stationed abroad while also providing shelter for those stranded during severe weather conditions inside Chicago’s Loop area (now Near West Side). In 1922-23, StJohn hosted “The Great Lakes Fair” which attracted millions of visitors from all over North America to seeproducts from across five states plus Canada and Mexico combined! In 1955-56, after more than 50 years of service as a parish center and educational institution for local kids & adults alike (including clergy members),StJohn underwent an extensive renovation/updates that included brand new roofs/gables, updated plumbing & heating systems (& much more!), reopening on July 1st 1957 with characteristic solemn Masses celebrated by Father Edward Jansen followed by lovely refreshments & open house Wednesday evenings until Easter Sunday inclusive! Today still led byFather Edward Jansen with support staff comprising Auxiliary Priestesses Darlene Anne Healy; Sister Janeane O’Malley; Sisters Anita Frost; Sister Lucia Ziegler; Mother Joanne Maher; Religious Director Teresa Smith - many talented young ladies have stepped up to help care for our Parish since 2007 – we are truly blessed!
St. John's was founded in 1800 by Scotsmen who had emigrated to what is now Indiana. The town was named for the apostle John, who journeyed through the area in search of religious truth. The first church in St. John's was built in 1802, and various other churches were built throughout the years. In 1907, a community hall and school were built in the town square, and St. John's became an incorporated municipality that same year.
