John is an 1892 addition to the St. John Township in McDonough County, Indiana. The township was organized on December 3, 1892 from parts of Dunkirk Township and Clearfield Township. The name of the town derived from Saint John, a bishop in the early Christian era who helped spread Christianity through central Europe. A post office operated in John for 25 years; it was discontinued on December 3, 1924. The first settler in what is now St. John was James Hickey who arrived in 1852. He married Anna Sheehan and they had six children: Mary Hickey (1857-1927), James Hickey (1859-1935), Anna Hickey (1862-1945), Patrick Hickey (1865-1925), Maurice Sheehan (1867-1920) and Margaret Sheehan (1870-1945). In 1872, Wm. Kelling bought 640 acres of land west of the village where he built a log cabin that served as his home until 1901 when he sold it to Gertrude Greenidge for $450 cash with 10% interest payable annually. Mrs. Greenidge lived there until her death in 1951 which caused Mr .Greenidge to sell it again to Jerome Pappanella for $2,500 cash with no interest due until 1960 when Pappanella put up a sign that read "For Sale - House & property - 5 miles north of Indianapolis." Mrs .Pappanella moved out after she lost her health because of living too close to an air raid shelter during World War II; however, her son still uses part of the house as his bedroom today! In 1909 St.-John became one of 20 townships formed by President William McKinley under Section 8(a) of the Indian Territory Act but remained unincorporated because it could not agree upon its own government or chief executive officer like other townships had done since organization. On July 1st 1911 Jno.[patrick] Ryan took over as Chief Executive Officer for all unincorporated territory within the new statehood including St.-John Township which eventually ratified its own Constitution on November 7th 1912 becoming an incorporated town governed by a Mayor/Council form of government with Ryan serving as Mayor from 1914 thru 1948 inclusive while also holding other offices such as Treasurer & Justice Of Peace etc.. After World War II endedRyan left politics and died at age 91 on October 9th 1964 leaving his wife Patsy Ryan running the town funcitonally until her death on November 16th 1978 followed by their three daughters Darlene Shafer Cooks, Jeanne Cooks Allender and Kathleen Allender Roche taking over during their mother's lifetime until Kathleen's death on April 6th 1984 making Darlene Shafer Cooks Town Manager effective January 1st 1985 thru December 31st 1989 having held this position 5 times consecutively!!
In 1801, St. John's Parish was organized in what is now the city of Terre Haute, IN. The first pastor was Rev. Frenchy and he served until 1811. In 1816, Rev. John Broughton became the first resident pastor and served until his death in 1830. During this time, several churches were built including the First Baptist Church (1817), Second Baptist Church (1821), Third Baptist Church (1825), Presbyterian Church (1827) and Methodist Episcopal Church (1829). Reverend Broughton also founded a school in 1815 which continues to be operated today as St. John’s Academy.
