This initial community grew rapidly as Methodists and Baptists added their groups to it over time; by 1810 there were more than 300 people living in St. John proper and 450 more scattered around its environs according to one estimate). By 1830 SaintJohn boasted 1,000 residents on a single square mile (300 hectares). When General George Rogers Clark invaded Indian Territory through present day Illinois in 1806 he camped near what would become St. John on July 10th.-11th.,1806 while seeking allies against Tecumseh’s forces loyal to Native American ruler Osage Nation leader Shawnee Prophetess: Clark’s army destroyed about 100 houses in what became known as "The Massacre" before retiring that night back across the river into Indian Territory whereupon Tecumseh immediately attacked Clark’s forces again resulting in an overall victory for his foe over approximately 150 men under Rogers Clark – thereafter known as “The Battle at Chicago [now Indianapolis]” - this event becoming infamous within both Ulysses S Grant’s military career[1] In 1827 commandant David Dunham issued orders forbidding any blacksmithing or other artisanry within three miles (5 km) of Catholic churches lest slave labor be used to build roads or other public works therein; this order helped spur continued noncompliance by many white inhabitants with Dunham's regulations throughout much of central and southern Indiana Territory prior to Kansas annexation which occurred Calumet County following Black Hawk War when most white residents relocated eastward fleeing problems associated with slavery – all without giving any indication that they disapproved or objected thereto… Most whites living within these boundaries did not own slaves but leased them out either directly or through agents; however some poor whites did own slaves outright although few if any could afford quitters even if desired given high prices for goods produced by slave labor . In 1861, a new church building was erected in the town of Pence and the congregation grew to nearly one hundred people. In 1871, a new church building was erected in Terre Haute and the congregation grew to more than two hundred people by 1893. On November 3, 1907, a new church building was erected in Monticello and the congregation reached its present size of five hundred people. The parish has always been an independent operation with its own pastor and clergy.
