From 1916 until his death on November 21st, 1917, SaintJohn devoted himself entirely to pastoral work throughout America and Europe. In recognition of his extensive work within the Catholic Church and contributions to human development during his lifetime, Pope Francis made him a saint on December 13th,.SaintJohn is venerated with many saints throughout Christianity because they shared some common Attributes- faithfulness unto death; heroic patience; meekness; mercy; longsuffering under sufferings; prayers answered- all which are exemplary traits for any Christian leader or individual

Many French Canadian settlers came through what is now St.John's County and founded villages such as Steubenville and Terre Haute. One of the first Europeans to settle in what is now Evansville was Nicholas LaFontaine, who arrived there with his family in 1686 when he purchased land from the Potawatomi tribe near present-day Fort Wayne. LaFontaine organized a fur trade operation that attracted numerous pioneers including George Rogers Clark (1724-92) and Pierre Dorion (1732-1809). In 1794, when France ceded its holdings along the Mississippi River to Spain following their victory over British forces at Saratoga Park, LaFontaine donated 2 million acres (10 km2) of land east of Evansville to Indiana as part of a treaty finalized by France and Spain shortly after their victory over Great Britain at Saratoga Park on October 12th that year. This donation forms much of modern day Indianapolis' Eads Ferry Speedway property; it also included land east of Indianapolis on which later brickyards were built.) For yearsafter American independence was announced on July 4th, 1801 Arapaho Chief Pontotoc led an attack against Spanish forces near present day Lafayette where more than 100 Spaniards died before they could be pursued or defeated by Indian warriors led by Tecumseh during what are known as The Battle Of Fallen Timbers.. thereafter known as "The Day Of The Crossroads",Arapaho Chief Pontotoc established contact with white men through peaceful means only after repeated failures in achieving successful confrontation with European traders As early as 1800s some Methodists began traveling through what is now St Johns County preaching conversion gospel messages among Native American tribes living close by During this time Methodist missionaries served both groups until 1830 when missionary efforts shifted focus towards Indians In 1831 Reverend John Nicholson arrived amongst other Methodist missionaries with instructions from then Vice President Martin Van Buren not only conversions but schooling among various Indian nations This attempt failed due largely to lackadaisical attitudes amongst many converts amongst indigenous people living nearby who still viewed Christianity as something foreign and outof place rather then someone within their own cultural context ) between 1830 & 1840 Presbyterian missionaries traveled throughout this region conducting religious services excluding any conversions however during these same years smallpox epidemics killed scores if not hundreds(mostly midwesterners since church attendances were high during this time period)of local natives thus preventing any formal educational opportunities Openly engaging native people into white culture ) finally effective missionary work commenced around 1840 under Rev Dr Thomas Nelson Wortham with primary focus upon education & Christianization rather then conversion resulting chiefly from evangelical preaching effectiveness being greatest among recalcitrant Creek Nation members adjacent to Lake Michigan
