In 1818, a group of colonists named St. John's settlers began to move into what is now St. John Township in central Indiana. The township was organized on October 25, 1818 and the first post office was established in 1819. On January 1, 1826, the name of the township was changed to Mishawaka after Mishawaka County in upper Michigan.
