Pope Pius XII called St. John the "Lamb of God" in a sermon in1948. The bishopric was first established on this site in 1814 by Saint George and his eight companions, who had fled Hungary during the 1849 revolution. In 1872, when St. John's Basilica was completed, the population of the town became so numerous that it was decided to move the bishopric from Hungary to Indiana. In 1907, Bishop James Meehan erected a statue of Our Lady of Mount Carmel on top of the old Jesuit convent which stood on what is now State Road 607 north of town. This convent once served as a training center for Catholic priests in Indiana and other states. The present-day basilica stands on land donated by Mrs. Anna Cline and her husband, Mr. Hiram Cline II, Sr., in 1917 after they donated all their homes and barns to Holy Cross Church for use as a parish schoolhouse and church/parish home. The martyrdom of Sts .John's missionaries--the only Catholics martyred by Protestants during World War I--was one factor leading to increased piety around this time and more people becoming baptized into the Catholic faith; however, until 1957 there were no minor or disputed polemics between American bishops and Rome over issues such as Latin Mass versus vernacular services inside Roman churches (i.e., "ante laici"). Finally relativizing some traditional Catholic practices--such as anointing marriage candidates with holy oil before ordination proceedings--Pope Paul VI softened these positions in Humanae Vitae (1968). Subsequently many American bishops followed suit (sometimes controversially), while most Italian bishops have continued to adhere strictly to Humanae Vitae principles... St Johns Parish has been located near Bloomington since its establishment back in 1792 when Father Antoine de Kolb founded our parish here at Kinross Springs with six families from Tipton Township along with two slaves who labored under him... Father Kolb built four small chapels including one that still stands today known as Chapel #5 on Main Street just east of where Prieststown Rd meets SR 607 today... When Kinross Springs burned down in 1794 Father Antoine rebuilt it using materials he had looted from Trenton Township during their war with France... Knoppers Chapel played an important role throughout our history both religious and political due largely to its location close by we could easily attend services without fear of attack from neighboring villages or militias seeking revenge against French forces
In 1816, the first white person to set foot in what is now St. John’s County was Elijah White. He and his family were the first settlers in what is now St. John’s County after being driven out of Indiana by Native Americans.
