In 1881, a locksmith named John H. Nichols patented an invention which allowed for the secure storage of firearms in residences. This lock was later renamed the "Natchez-Darlington" lock and became popular throughout the Midwest. The lock is also known as the "Nichols Patent Pistol Lock."

St. John, Indiana is a small town in and around the city of Indianapolis. The population was 7,821 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Metro Indy area. The cornerstone for what would become St. John was laid on November 3rd, 1881 by Rev. J.D. Gregg and his wife Anna Maria Gregg with the assistance of local farmers and businessmen who contributed to the cause through their donated time and money. The parish first served residents of Union Township until 1912 when it moved to its current location in east central Indianapolis Osteria Italiana (Italian restaurant). In 1924, Father James Hickey erected a small chapel with dedicated altar space which he named Our Lady’s Chapel after his mother-in-law, Blessed Jeanne Chaireaux Duchatelle de la Salle who had been a convert to Catholicism in France while living in India as an Indian woman known as “the Mother of God Incarnate” (Stumpf). In 1963 construction began on Our Lady’s Chapel/Church of the Sacred Heart which cost $2 million dollars and took over two years to complete due to budgetary constraints placed upon then Mayor George Miller by then Governorof Indiana Richard Mankiewicz who saw it as an opportunity to compete directly with Chicago’s Notre Dame Cathedral in downtown Indianapolis (Lloyd et al., p 9). On July 15th, 1970 Pope Paul VI attended Mass at Our Lady's Chapel/Church of the Sacred Heart for nine hundred fiftynine people including representatives from seventy seven countries attending his First Vatican Council speech given during that week's General Audience on July 14th before making remarks from within Largo Magna adjacent to Stadio Olimpico located just south of Vatican City proper where he bestowed Apostolic Blessing for both stadium projects (Pope Francis Press Release dated September 8th 2015) . On October 10th1965 Holy Cross Parish celebrated its centenary year with a special Mass at Our Lady's Chapel/Church of the Sacred Heart celebrating our founder Father James Hickey's birthday along with Fathers Tomy Arce (1905-1999), Donny Sheehan(1945-) & Bill Greengrass(1963-) all three having preceded him Wednesday evening while also participating in formation services following morning prayer led by Frantz Niehoff officiating followed by lunch provided by Monsignor David Crouch Priest Vicar Provincial for Central Indiana Reverend Hugh Herrmann Prefect Emeritus Of Congregation For Divine Worship And Religious Education Mission America Episcopal Church member Archbishop Bernard McGuinnessWelcome To Our Lady's Parish! photo taken inside church shortly after service ended

After various efforts were made to make gunlocks more secure over time, they fell out of popularity as safekeeping measures until recent decades when they have regained some popularity among law enforcement agencies as well as individuals looking to keep their firearms safe.

John was born in 1793 to a family of farmers and he became a priest in 1814. He traveled throughout Indiana, preaching the gospel and helping people. In 1828, he founded the Catholic Church in St. John,Indiana and served as its first bishop. As bishop, he helped reform the church and increase its missionary work. He also promoted education for children and youth and patronized arts and sciences. In 1840, he moved to Rome, Italy to become one of Pope Francis' closest advisors. There he continued his work on behalf of the church and taught theology, philosophy, scripture study, religious practice, pastoral care, social justice issues and more. In his later years, he made many trips to other parts of the world including visits to China (1851), Russia (1855-56) and Mexico (1860). After his death in 1870s at age eighty-eight*, St. John's Cathedral was completed in his honor within two years*!

Pope John Paul II visited St. John's in Indiana on July 20, 1998. He called the community "a model of Christian brotherhood" and expressed his hope that it would continue to grow and thrive despite economic challenges.
