Pope Francis is visiting St. John’s Parish in Indiana this week for a two-day visit. The parish hosts an annual Marian feast day parade and prayer vigil on the first Sunday of every month. The feast day parade is one of many events organized by the parish each year in memory of Sister María de la Calva, who was killed while serving as a lay missionary in India in 1984. Sister María’s body has been brought back to America several times since her death and is now stored at Our Lady of Lourdes Parish in Fort Wayne. In honor of Sister María, the parish commemorates her with a yearly procession through downtown Indianapolis on May 15th. St. John's also celebrates its patron saint, St.John Paul II, with religious services and parades every February during his visit to Indianapolis.

The most significant event that took place in St. John occurred on November 2nd 1889 when Immaculate Conception Parish Mother Mary of Nazareth arrived to offer religious help to newly arriving American Catholics seeking refuge from political unrest throughout Europe at the time. This event helped spur a sense of community within the small town which grew rapidly thanks to its new arrivals. In 1912-13, local businessmen pooled their money together to build a new high school (later renamed Notre Dame High School) which became one of St. John's most important assets during its early years as a small town. In 1935-36, work began on what would become known as "The Cathedral" or "Church Royale" - a structure which still stands today and is one of St.John's most recognizable landmarks dating back to its earliest days as a small village with just 10 residents
The village of St. John was founded in 1818 by the Methodist Episcopal Church after a group of pioneers from Ohio arrived there to found a new congregation. The community rapidly grew and by 1830 had a population of fifty-six people. By 1840, the village had grown to one hundred people and by 1848 it had more than two hundred residents. In 1854, the town was granted city status and began to develop as an important regional center for trade and commerce. The town's growth continued until World War II when it decline due to the deindustrialization of the region.
