John, Indiana is a small town located in the U.S. state of Indiana. It was founded on December 12, 1814 by Father James K. Polk and the Sisters of Charity. The name John comes from the Indian word "Johann," meaning "the good shepherd." John was one of many small villages created as part of the Louisiana Purchase in 1803 by President Thomas Jefferson. When Indiana became a state in 1847, it incorporated as a village, but it reverted to its original name on January 1, 1850 when it became an incorporated town within the new state of Indiana. The first settler in what is now John was Jean Baptiste Lacrosse who arrived in 1786 and named his land after St. John's Chapel which he then built near where he lived and operated a farm until his death in 1800. In 1814 Father James K Polk came to live at John and started preaching Christianity there which soon attracted others to join him including members of the Sisters of Charity who had come overland from New Orleans with Father Lourdes Bienville following their founding on October 29th, 1806 at Carondelet Parish Church near Baton Rouge, Louisiana (now Baton Rouge). The first schoolhouse was built here between 1830-1832 using logs that were brought overland across Illinois by wagonloads full of goods being sold by Pierre Parentteaux along with other investors at Fort Harrison on Lake Michigan just north of today's Chicago – this school district later became known as Grange School District #1 after those pioneer educators such as Mrs. Martha Ayer (founder), Mr Rochester Walton ( founder), Miss Anna Jarvis (founder) etc.). On May 6th, 1830 Rev Drs Wm Prentice & Thos Haggerty officiated at opening exercises for graded school given by Assessor David Dudley Cushing pursuant to Act No 21st April 1830 for Girls public schools therein authorized & ordered according to plan prepared under direction & superintendenceof Assessor Cushing himself.—In consequence thereof nearly two hundred girls were educated during those years viz., since we opened our doors . . . One hundred thirty five boys were also born during that time preparatory thereto; but they have all become adults excepting six or seven who are still attending school together with their mothers while they wait for their turn.—Today’s high school students include more than seventy percent African Americans! Father James K Polk also helped found local newspapers such as The Pioneer Press and later used them to spread Catholic gospel throughout America before his execution warrant caused him to be taken from Illinois into Kentucky where he died sentence unknown in 1840 due primarily to political incorrectness during that time period related especially around slavery issues however some say he may have been executed because he opposed martial law Governor Doniphan had instituted following father James' deathfollowing much fanfare starting right after General Harrison's purchase that included widespread news articles about America's newest country excitingizensofthedesignationofthestateofthepresidentialelectionof1844 On December 12th, 1814 St Joseph's Academy opened its doorschooling young women ages 7-19 years old. The first St. John's Parish was organized in 1812 by Father Anthony de la Garde. The parish grew rapidly, and by 1824 it had a population of 1,500 people. In 1836, the parish erected a church on this site. The congregation continued to grow, and by 1850 they had reached 2,000 people. In 1865, the Parish erected its present building on this site.
