St. John's Episcopal Church, located in the Township of St. John, Indiana was established in 1825. The church is one of the oldest churches in the township and it has been said that it "got its start as a simple wooden structure on the corner of Main and Washington Streets." Reverend Dr. George Watkins officiated at first services and later became the first bishop of what would become St. John's County, Indiana. Bishop Watkins' parish included parts of present-day Indianapolis as well as Batavia, Vincennes, and LaGrange townships. In 1853, when bishop Watkins resigned to take up a neworate in Philadelphia, his parishioners elected Revd Rufus Cady to succeed him as their pastor. The cornerstone for the current building was laid on November 3rd, 1854 by Bishop Cady himself. The church was dedicated on February 17th, 1865 by Bishop Payson with Revd Wm Harnett presiding over the service from the pulpit. In 1922–23 architect Jens Jensen designed an addition to the rear which seats 350 people—the largest such addition ever made to an American Episcopal church in that era! As part of America's bicentennial celebration in 1923–24, St. John's Parish celebrated its centennial with a series of events culminating in a three daylong festival including processions through downtown Indianapolis and lunches at local hotels near campus during which distinguished guests were honored with speeches and refreshments before returning home for more important celebrations within their respective parishes (eFigures 1 & 2). In 1819, St. John's Parish was established in the town of Carmel, Indiana. The first pastor of St. John's Parish was Rev. Daniel Webster. In 1826, the parish was moved to its present location in Carmel and Rev. Nicholas Fenton became the first pastor of the parish. In 1847, a school for children of Catholics was founded in Carmel by Rev. Fenton and Mrs. Cushing Johnson and it continues to be operated today under the auspices of St. John's Parish School District No. 1
