On November 3, 1828, St. John's Parish was organized in the town of Terre Haute by Rev. George W. Smith and Dr. James A. Harmon. The first pastor was Rev. George Wittell who served for one year and then Dr. Harmon took over until his death in 1829. Reverend John Hinton served as the second pastor from 1829 to 1840 and again from 1851 to 1861 when he resigned due to health concerns only a few months after taking office because he could not keep up with the parish's rapid growth which had outgrown its original boundaries and resources both financially and manpower wise. In 1850, Revs John Burt and Charles Addison were hired as pastors but soon resigned due to differences with other church members over their approach to social services (ealth) leading to a power struggle within the church that ultimately ended in Addison's resignation in1851 also citing health concerns as the cause for his departure which left Burt as interim pastor until another pastor could be found or appointed by the board of trustees which eventually chose Revs Ebenezer Gist who served from 1861-1875 before retiring effective December 1, 1865 at age 70 years old after serving more than 47 years in that position including 10 years during the American Civil War being called home on leave twice while serving in multiple states during that time period including two terms as president of Indiana State Board of Education). After Ebenezer Gist's retirement, a search began for a new pastor but no suitable candidate was found so on December 1, 1865 Bishop Jno Meeks formally named Revs Alpha Lambertson as interim pastor until a successor could be found or appointed by him following an exhaustive search lasting six months with little result beyond some verbal references from potential candidates but no definite decisions made about who would become permanent Pastor until finally on January 25, 1866Alpha Lambertson installed himself as Pastor effective at 6am this date having been selected unanimously by all present at his installation according to custom at such occasions presided over by Bishop Meeks himself seated behind the pews across from where lay Ministerial tools were spread out upon which sat several Congregational clergymen accorded honorARY roles throughout the service including Deacon Augustus Fenton representing Terre Haute society Merchants' Association & banker Mr Samuel Pemberton acting Clerk & Trustee/Secretary functions
