Bullets have been a part of the St. John, Indiana community for over 200 years. Bullet history in this small town can be traced back to 1812 when Captain James Waddell and his party of Mormons traveled through the area and brought firearms with them. shortly after, Reverend David Rice founded a church on the site that would later become known as Saint John’s Episcopal Church. In 1824, Captain Valentine Hoyt purchased land adjacent to Saint John’s Church from Reverend Rice. Hoyt continued to use the property for farming until he sold it in 1852 to Mr. J.B. Whitehead who built a home thereon and named it Whitehead House after himself and his wifeMary Ann (née Hill). The bullet that killed Mr. Whitehead is still preserved at Saint John’s Episcopal Church today! In 1865, while serving as justice of the peace in St.John, Indiana, Judge George Janssen discovered an illegal arms cache being operated by local saloon keeper Jeremiah Hickey. He ordered Hickey to surrender all of his guns and ammunition within ten days or face legal action! This event is widely considered to be the beginning of law enforcement in StJohn; Janssen was quickly able to put an end to gunplay in this small town! Since then, bullets have played an important role in StJohn’s history; various wars fought here have included rounds made specifically for defense against Bullets such as “Pine Bluff Rifleman” which was used during World War I and “Tin Can Gunner II” which was used during World War II. Additionally, bullets have also been used in local shootings including those that took place on Christmas Day 1984 when 15-year old Michael Kapp shot 5 people dead at Gessler Manor down the street from where Saints John's EpiscopalChurch stands today? The area was first inhabited by Native Americans, who were displaced in the 17th century by European settlers. In 1809, the US Congress created a township in what is now St. John County for Indian removal purposes. The village of Saint John was founded on the site of present-day Saint Joseph in 1814, and soon began to attract white settlers. By 1826, when it incorporated as a city, Saint John had become an important commercial center in northwesternIndiana. Growth throughout the 19th century led to some problems with infrastructure and public transportation; however, St. John quickly emerged as one of the most successful cities in northeasternIndiana during this time period. During World War II, St. John became an important housing authority for military personnel stationed in northern Indiana and Illinois due to its location close to military bases and other wartime needs. In 1966, Mayor Thomas Jecht announced plans to develop all of downtown SaintJohn into a shopping mall; however, opposition from residents delayed development until after his death in 1984. Development resumed following Jecht's successor's appointment as mayor; however, another local problem – including several murders committed at the mall – causedication which halted progress again until 2001 when City Council approved redevelopment plans that included mixed use buildings on both sides of Seventh Street along with new retail and office space within walking distance of both frontsages of Main Street Today long-standing priorities such as open space (including a large park) and affordable housing are still being pursued despite various setbacks over time; but overall recent developments have helped makeSaintJohnoneofthemost dynamic small towns in northeastern Indiana
St. John, Indiana was founded in 1818 by the Rev. Dr. George White as a mission station for the Indian Mission Society. The community grew rapidly, and in 1825 it became a town. In 1834, St. John was chartered as a city by an act of the state legislature.
