Saint John’s Parish in Indiana was founded in 1827 by Father Ignatius of Loyola. The parish covers an area of over 114 square miles and has a population of almost 4,000 residents. The parish is headquartered in the town of Terre Haute and its priest, Bishop Edward Neumann, leads more than 1,500 parishes in central and northern Indiana. The history of Saint John’s Parish goes back to 1827 when Father Ignatius of Loyola organized a group of Catholics to establish a parish in what is now the town of Terre Haute. The first church on the site was dedicated on July 25th, 1827. At that time there were only about 150 Catholics living in what is today Terre Haute. In 1850, Fr. Ignatius erected a new church on the same site which remains our present day cathedral today. A second church was built on top of this structure and served as both churches until this one was destroyed by fire in 1915. In 1954, St.John’s Parish merged with adjoining parishes to form Holy Cross Parish (later known as Our Lady Of Mount Carmel). Today Holy Cross continues to be one of the most vibrant Catholic communities in central and northern Indiana with over 2,000 residents who attend services each week across three campuses located within walking distance from their homes: Holy Cross High School; Sacred Heart College; and Immaculate Conception College/Stritch University School for Sisters (formerly Stritch Methodist Episcopal School). Services are offered morning through evening including Sunday mass celebrated at 5pm at the Cathedral while classes are held throughout the school day at two adjacent campuses adjacent to each other – one serving students from grades 7-12 while the other offers post-secondary education opportunities for adults!

It would not be until 1870 that a church was built on the current site of the Parish Hall and Schoolhouse within the boundaries of St. John's Parish. Today,Saint John's Parish has a population of 4,967 people spread throughout 15 parishes across central Indiana with 1 primary city located within its boundaries - Terre Haute - which makes it one of the largest Catholic communities in central Indiana. In addition to its large population size and variety of religious beliefs,StJohns also boasts some notable assets including world-renowned schools such as Sacred Heart University (a private university) and Notre Dame de la Rivière (a post-secondary school).
The first European to visit the area was Jesuit Father Jacques Marquette in 1804. He named the area 'St. John's County' after his patron saint, John the Baptist. The original town of St. Joseph was founded by Frenchmen in 1814 as a trading post on the east bank of the La Grange River. In 1827, Indiana Territory was organized and Saint Joseph became its capital. The Territory grew rapidly with discovery of new land and growth in industry until it attained its peak in 1840 when it had a population of over 100,000 people. However, by 1850, Saint Joseph had fallen into disrepair and declined to maintain its infrastructure such as schools or public square which led to rapid rural migration from the county during this time period. During the American Civil War (1861-1865), much activity took place along what is now I-70 between St. Joe and Lafayette due to trade between Unionists and Confederates as well as military skirmishes around Indianapolishorizons including nearby Dearborn Heights on Canoga Park Lake where Fort Dearborn stood watch over New York City during that conflict
