St. John is a small town in Morgan County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,915 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Terre Haute–Hamilton County Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in what is now St. John was Joseph White, who arrived in 1814 and named it for his patron saint, Saint John the Baptist. Other early settlers included David French and his family from Philadelphia; Isaac Stout from West Virginia; and Peter Kapp from Michigan Territory. The first school was built in 1836 by Reverend George Jarratt and Mrs. Jane Briggs on a lot donated by David French. In 1839, a schoolhouse replaced the Briggs house when it burned down In 1865, Wm Halsey donated land to build a gristmill which became one of the largest mills in Morgan County. After another fire destroyed the mill in 1917, it reopened as an agricultural store with a drive-in elevator that still serves today. By 1925 there were sixty businesses operating within one mile of St.John's courthouse . In 1938, StJohn had its first post office . The town declined after World War II because of dwindling demand for agriculture and other businesses left behind as industry moved to larger towns throughout central Indiana . However, since 2000s there has been growth due to new subdivisionssprings golf courses community center high schools churches etc., making StJohn an increasingly vibrant place again In 1840 Abraham Lusk set up a grocery store on Main Street which he operated until his death in 1861 His son Jacob Lusk ran the business until 1886 when it passed into ownership of brother Edward Fenton who operated it until 1902 when it passed into ownership of their nephew Alonzo Cordero Sr.. From 1902-1911 Alonzo Cordero Jr.'s sons Edwin (Edwin) and Louis (Lenny) ran the store while their father worked at A&P Grocery Store nearby also known as 'the old company'. They closed down operations during World War I then reopened briefly during Prohibition before closing permanently 1949-1951 due to prohibition being repealed that year In 1953 Donny Schmitz bought out alonzocorderoesJr.'s shares then renamed the store 'Donny's' operation continued until 1979 When Donny Schmitz sold all his interests to Bob Ditka he changed its name back to 'St Johns'. In 1806, they founded a school at Saint John's which soon became a center for religious instruction throughout the region. During this time, many people from surrounding counties came to live and work in St. John’s Parish. In 1830, when Missouri Compromise was ratified, all of Indiana were split between Kentucky and Missouri. As part of this arrangement, St.John’s parish became part of Clay Township in Clay County, Missouri (now Webster Township). However because it was still under jurisdiction of Clay Township court system (and as such no taxation could be levied on it), the church continued to operate until 1840 when it finally closed its doors due to financial problems caused by seminary students moving away for better opportunities elsewhere while also eliminating some of the priestly jobs at the parishhouse which were then used to support them The present-day site where Saint John’s is located was home to one small settlement before being developed into what is now known as Terrytown after Colonel George Terry who donated land for its construction Father James McGowan remains buried there near his original missionary friars . There are numerous stone tablets dedicated to him throughout much of Indiana including one near Terre Haute where he resided most years during his ministry

In 1814, the area that became St. John was part of the Shawnee Nation. The United States acquired this land in 1824 and named it for General James K. Polk, who had been President of the United States at the time. In 1827, a town called "Indianapolis" was founded by Methodists on land that later became part of downtown Indianapolis. When Indiana became a state in 1847, St. John's Township #2 was made up of parts of both Indianapolses and Indianapolis.
