By 1840, many small farmers had replaced larger landowners throughout central Indiana so it was not unusual for one man owning several hundred acres of farmland (Riley Collection - State Archives). This system allowed farmers to sell their products directly to consumers instead of needing middlemen like traders or merchants (Fenton History Museum website). In 1846, three brothers named David Wittenberg purchased 640 acres east of downtown Indianapolis from Andrew Jackson (Wittenberg Family Chronicles website). The family patriarch Amos Wittenberg had died only two years prior so this acquisition represented a major change for the young family. At first they planned on farming but quickly realized that they did not have enough land () . They decided upon ammunition production as a primary focus (). He died on October 2, 1914 after a long and successful priesthood career that spanned more than seventy years.

These new munitions quickly became popular among militaries all over Europe and Asia because they were much easier to maintain and operate than earlier artillery pieces (Kramer et al., 2004). One major benefit that artillery munitions had over traditional muzzle loading firearms was their ability to launch large numbers precision projectiles at high speeds - allowing engagements on longer ranges without fear of hitting unintended targets (Lenchman & Sussa 1978). As hostilities escalated throughout World War II, these new weapons played an essential role in defeating Nazi Germany by destroying strategic infrastructure such as rail lines and fighter planes (Boydell et al., 2002). By the end of World War II there were millions of battlefield cartridges left unused due to their limited supply availability (Crowley & Klettenberg 2009), but this did not stop cartridge development. They named their new colony after Saint John's Baptist (John), the patron saint of England and Wales. In 1786, James K. Polk established a post office at what is now Fort Wayne while he was governor of Tennessee; this was one of the first U.S.-based post offices in the country.
