Saint John, Indiana is a small community in St. Joseph County,Indiana located about 20 miles northwest of the city of Lafayette. It was laid out by James K. Polk in 1848 and named for Father John, an Irish missionary who had been sent to the area in 1835. The town had a population of only 100 people when it was incorporated in 1854, but it grew rapidly thanks to itsports and agricultural production. The town's first store was built on the corner of State and Main Streets in 1854. By 1870, Saint John had a post office, three churches (one Greek Orthodox), two schools, and a sawmill that produced lumber for local buildings and furniture. In 1886 the town began producing oil lamps for use by farmers at night; this led to its nickname "the Lamp City." In 1919 Saint John became one of the original towns in Lafayette Township when that township was organized; it remained an independent municipality until it merged with Lafayette in 1972. A number of notable residents have lived or worked in SaintJohn over its history: James K Polk (1848-1941), Daniel Boone (1785-1847), Sturgis Simpson (1824-1900), Dwight Eisenhower (1913-2008), Jay Leno (1945-2007)
The first European to set foot on the present-day St. John's Island was Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1524. The island was donated by the Creek Nation in 1795, and named after Saint John of Nepomuk (1521-1596), an Italian missionary who died here at the age of 36. In 1820, Fort Dearborn was built on the island to protect it from Indian attacks. The fort closed in 1862, and the island became a United States military post until 1959.
