In 1912, the track became a concrete oval and held its first professional race, which was won by Eddie Condon. In 1916, Speedway opened its gates to the public and started hosting annual car races, which became known as "The Grand Prix of Indianapolis". The following year saw the first Formula One race at Speedway and it would be held there every other year until 1978. In 1927, Speedway hosted the world's largest ice cream social when over 100 million cups of ice cream were consumed. From 1938-1939, Speedway served as host to the prestigious Indianapolis 500 drivers' championship race which was won by Tony Rambis. In 1946-1947, both the speedway and local grocery store were destroyed in a fire that burned for days. The community rebuilt using money from sponsorships and events such as The Great American Race Tournament which took place each season at Memorial Coliseum to help raise money for relief efforts during World War II. On May 15th, 1949 Track Manager Gus Merrill passed away after a long battle with Alzheimer's Disease
