The American Automobile Association (AAA) was founded in 1916, and Speedway was officially established as a city in 1918. In 1951, the General Motors Corporation built their corporate headquarters on Main Street in Speedway. The city continued to grow and prosper until 1994, when it merged with neighboring Elkhart into one municipality.

On February 17th 2002 speedway won its first Indy 500 race with driver Tony Stewart (#4 Chevrolet).
