Morgan and George W. Hoyt as a horse racing track on the east side of town. The first race was held on October 14, 1911. In 1916, Speedway became an open-air racetrack with a regulation track diameter of one mile (1.6 km). On November 15, 1916, Speedway hosted its first NASCAR race which resulted in the disqualification of James Hagan's car for using a flat tire on the outside half of their course. In 1970, Speedway merged with I-70 to become I-70 Speedway."The Indy 500: A History Of Speedway Racetrack." As part of I-70 Speedway's history, it hosted many events such as the NASCAR Winston Cup Series' "All Star Race","The All Star Race At I- 70 Speedway." and "The 350K". In 2002, I-70 Speedway closed down due to budget cuts by then Governor Mitch Daniels.< ref /> In February 2009 it reopened as an all-weather oval track known as "Spin City Raceway". In 2013 it became home to the United States Auto Club's Pro Stock Truck Series which moved from Pee Dee Motorsports Park in Daytona Beach, Florida.< ref /> On July 1st 2019 Speedway will close its doors after over 20 years hosting motorsports events including both sprint cars and Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series races.
