On November 12, 1896, President Grover Cleveland delivered his final speech before being elected president on December 4th; during this speech he mentioned that "the great object which I have towards taking care of my constituents is speedway". As a result of this statement by Cleveland Speedway became an official track within twenty days as part as part of his plan for creating more efficient transportation systems across America throughout that year. speedway's dedication date came on January 6th 1897 when its grandstands opened with $10,-000 raised by members and spectators
