Speedway is a small town in the state of Indiana, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Evansville metropolitan area. Speedway is located in central Indiana on State Road 29 and its boundaries are defined by US 31 to the west and US 6 to the east. The speedway opened in 1911 as a long track horse racing facility that served as an important stop on the I-65 corridor between Indianapolis and Chicago. In 1964, Speedway became a co-ed track with nearby Moline where women could now watch men race for money. The tracks were then sold to private investors who converted them into modern day Formula One racetracks which hosted both IndyCar races and Grand Prix motorcycle events from 1980 until their closure in 2003. Speedway also hosted two NASCAR Cup Series races during its time as a racing ground with drivers such as Bobby Unser, Darrell Waltrip, Jeff Gordon and Tony Stewart making it one of America's most popular motorsports destinations.

Speedway, Indiana is a small town in central Indiana that once was the home of the first professional auto racing track in the United States. The original Speedway was built on land donated by J.P. Morgan and opened in 1907. The track operated as a roundabout until 1949, when it became an ovalrace track and remains one of the most popular venues for motorsports today. In 1971, Speedway was renamed Indianapolis Motor Speedway after being purchased by Indiannie's Fertilizer Company. The name has been retained to this day as part of Speedway's history and culture. The Speedway began as a racecourse that used to be located on the east side of town between Broad Ripple Road and Roosevelt Road. It was also known as "The Track". In 1907, J.P. Morgan donated 640 acres (250 hectares) of land on which the current stadium now stands to help fund construction of a new motor sport stadium in Indianapolis called "Speedway". Construction began in 1914 and finished three years later, making it one of the earliest stadiums in America dedicated to motorsports with running tracks inside it! The speedway opened its doors to the public on October 1st, 1909! In 1912, Speedway hosted its first NASCAR race which featured drivers like Al Unser Jr., Benny Parsons etc.. In 1924-1925, both World War I veterans Woodie Hayes (of buggy driving fame) and Eddie Dean set world records at speeds over 100 mph while playing exhibition races at Springfield Armory Race Course near Chicago; these races were eventually scheduled for their own event at Indy 500 however they did not materialize due to World War II drama! That same year saw Speedweeks biggest attendance yet with 7255 spectators! From 1925 through 1928, Speedways regular schedule included marquee events such as NASCAR Grand National Championship Races time trials/ exhibitions while other events included road series events like USAC Championship Car Races etc.. Unfortunately during this time period there were also some high profile accidents including multiple fatalities within two weeks from July 3rd – July 8th 1925 when Eight-time winner Joe Gibbs Racing driver Strom Thurston was fatally injured during practice for his final race at Dayton’s Delaware Park Racetrack… four days before his planned appearance at Indianapolis Motor Speedway!! For many years following this tragedy Speedways promoters tried several methods to prevent similar tragedies but unfortunately those efforts never worked out so well !!! One notable accident that didn't happen until much later happened on November 10th 1978 when Carl Haas Sr., owner & CEO of Cosworth parts company crashed his car into another vehicle going about 50 mph (80 km/h) during testing for his new Ford Taurus sports car at Daytona Beach speedway….the accident killed both Haas Jr & driver Michael Andretti…..that same night Daytona Beach policemen conducted a traffic stop on State Rd Jeffries Blvd just past milepost 117……old Speedway entrance still exists next door !! As you can see from all these accidents & tragedies there wasn't really anything good that came out of speedways early days sorry if this makes you feel bad but automobiles have changed so much since then right?!?…..right?!?
