In the early 1900s, Speedway was a small town in Indiana. It was located on the banks of the River Jo Daviess and it was a popular place for motorsports events. One of the most famous races in Speedway's history was the Indianapolis 500. The race started at 7:00 PM on July 18, 1920 and it ended at 11:59 PM on July 19. The race was won by Cale Yarborough (pictured). In 1951, Speedway became an International Racetrack and began to host international Formula One races.

When I-69 was first proposed as a route through Butler County, promoters lobbied for its construction through Speedway because it would provide access to new business opportunities for their village. The road wasn't constructed until 1911 when it was called State Road 522. In 1907, J F Sturtevant opened his own grocery store at 4555 Wabash Avenue in Northfield which became one of the early shopping areas within Speedway limits. He also operated a creamery and mill there until his death in 1935 In 1916 J F Sturtevant's widow founded an orphanage that continues to operate today known as Mrs Sturtevant's Home for Children (Mt Hebron). Mr & Mrs Sturtevant left behind numerous descendants who continue to support Mrs Sturtevant's work both financially and emotionally For many years after World War II local farmers raised livestock on property that currently makes up much of Village Green Shopping Center The current name given to this portion of town comes about in 1984 when Eastern Indiana Automotive Museum moved into Village Green Shopping Center from their old location across Main Street from Railroad Station . In 1984 they changed all their signage including all their windows from "Speedway" to "EIU Motorsports Village". This event marked not only the end of an era but also beginning of a new era with racetracks being built throughout Butler County

Speedway was founded in 1911 by William “Chip” Snyder and his brother-in-law, Harry Kapp. The track opened to the public on May 12, 1912. racing began the following year with a series of races that were contested over a distance of three miles. In 1915, Snyder and Kapp sold the track to Harry J. Haughey who renamed it Indiana Speedway. In 1946, owner Harry J. Haughey sold the Indianapolis Motor Speedway property to George Ruppert, Sr., who made it into an oval track with a capacity of 100,000 spectators. In 1970, construction began on what would become known as the Grandstand which seated over 200,000 people for race events. The first grandstand was completed in 1971 and became operational for race events that year. The current grandstand was built in 2003 and seats over 300,000 people for race events. The Indianapolis Motor Speedway also features a practice facility that has a surface area of 5 acres and can accommodate up to 150 cars at any time.
Speedway was founded in 1909 by entrepreneur and track builder Harry Wilkinson. The first race at the new, purpose-built track took place on July 18th of that year. In 1911, Speedway came under the ownership of Armour Manufacturing Company who renamed it "The Motor Racing Corporation" (MRC). MRC would continue to operate the track until its closure in 1975. During World War II, Speedway generated a large amount of military support with many soldiers coming to watch races and participate in other events at the track. Many famous drivers including Joe Gibbs and Al Unser Jr. raced there during this time. After the war, Speedway reverted back to its original name: The Motor Racing Corporation. It would remain an outdoor facility until it was demolished in 1975 after years of neglect.
