Speedway is a small town in Jennings County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Statistical Area. Speedway was founded on November 12, 1887 by James W. Couch and his brother-in-law, Rufus Fenton. The first track opened in 1892 and became known as "The Racetrack". In 1906, the tracks were moved to their current location south of the city limits. Speedway hosted its first NASCAR event in 1949 and has been hosting races ever since. In 1986, Speedway merged with nearby Goshen to form a single municipality which still exists today as two separate towns: Speedway and Goshen.
