Speedway is a small town in Miami County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,883 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Gary, Indiana Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first known permanent settlers in Speedway were Daniel and Catharine Goodspeed. They built a log cabin on the current site of Main Street in 1827. In 1831, they married Catharine's sister, Martha Goodspeed. TheGoodspeeds continued to live in Speedway until their death in 1898. In 1902, William Sanger purchases the land that now makes up Speedway from the Goodspeeds for $1 per acre. He began to build what would become his biggest and most important business venture - an electric streetcar line between Indianapolis and Chicago which he named "The SS" after his wife's maiden name (sometime shortened to "SS"). The company soon became very successful and by 1907 it had extended its service all the way to Chicago! In 1912, Sanger sold the SS line to James Jorgensen for $8 million dollars ($ when measured against today's currency). This was also an incredibly huge financial commitment for a time when electric transportation was relatively new and not yet widely accepted as a standard operating procedure across many countries around the world! James Jorgensen quickly converted his old horse-drawn streetcar into an electric one using new technology – turning it into one of America's first widespread success stories! It wasn't long before other businesses followed suit and by 1916 Speedway was headquarters for more than 20 different electric companies throughout America! As America shifted from Coal-fired power generation towards Electric Power Development (EPD) status during World War I there were dramatic changes taking place within Speedway – initially due to wartime needs but eventually because of advancements made within EPD itself! In addition to becoming home to some of America’s leading manufacturers of electrical equipment such as transformers and generators it also became home to some of racing’s most prestigious events including both Grand Prix races ([1916] Grand National Races), US Auto Club meetings (now known as IndyCar Series events), World Championship meetings (now known as MotoGP events) as well as Historic American Racing places like White Sands Race Course ([1920]), Florence Motor Raceway ([1924]) etc….. [Emphasis added] With so many various venues available nearby & much history here still alive & kicking today Speedway remains one of my favorites local spots along with Nappi’s Corner just east on State Rd

The first modern track at Speedway was built on land owned by George Doolittle in 1887. In 1895, the brothers merged their businesses and formed the Doolittle Company which built and operated tracks throughout Indiana until 1927 when it lost its license to operate tracks due to financial problems. The City of Speedway took over operation of the track from 1925-1927. Speedway hosted the 1932 U.S. Olympic Games where America's best athletes competed for gold medals in track and field events including running, shot put, hammer throw and weightlifting. Other notable Olympics include 1980 (the only time speedway played host to an international event), 1984 (the only time speedway hosted an IAAF World Cup event) and 2012 (the first time speedway played host to a NASCAR race).
Speedway was founded in 1903 by John W. Sears and his son, Harry Sears. The first track opened in the town of Speedway, now part of Indianapolis, on October 15th, 1903. The track was built just south of the present day city limits and it served as a racetrack for horse and buggy racing until 1907. In 1911, the Speedway Corporation was formed and it became an owner-operator of the original track. Thetrack continued to be used for racing until it closed in 1957.
