In 1907, the track merged with nearby I-70 to form one large transportation hub known as "The Mile." The merger led to increased traffic and growth at the track which caused damage to the infield in 1978 that required $2 million worth of repairs. In 1984, Speedway opened its world's largest open-air concession stand known as The Buffet which still stands today. In 2007, the tracks management announced it would close the doors for good after more than 150 years of operation. However, due to a resurgence in amateur racing at the track, it reopened on October 10th under new management and is currently running again with plans to keep it operational until 2021.
The Speedway was first opened in 1911 by the Royal Automobile Club of America as a racing and exhibition ground. The track initially consisted of a main straight, four turns and a banked left turn. In 1924, the track was dedicated to US speedway pioneer, Bill France. It became an annual event that drew large crowds of spectators. The Speedway closed its doors in 1971 after years of decline in attendance.
