Speedway is a small city in the U.S. state of Indiana and the seat of Morgan County. The population was 5,995 at the 2010 census, making it the smallest city in Indiana by population. It is part of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Statistical Area. The original Speedway was built on a site near what is now northbound I-465 and southbound I-70 exit ramps east of South Bend (in today's Union Township). The track opened on November 10, 1911, as "Indianapolis Motor Speedway". In 1928, it became a part of the National Football League (NFL) for one season before being sold to Chicago Bears owner George Halas for $2 million. In 1933, ownership passed from Halas to his son Edward "Dutch" Halas Jr., who renamed it "Chicago Stadium". In 1938, during World War II when Indianapolis was occupied by Japanese forces, Speedway served as an airfield for bombers bombing German targets in Europe. In 1945, after Indianapoolis Liberation Day ceremonies were held there to celebrate that event and recognize all those who had helped make it possible,the name "Spindlespeedway" was given to the current facility which housed both racespace and post-race functions including receptions for parade riders and dignitaries until 1957 when they moved permanently into their current complex across I-465 from downtown Indy

On December 6, 1892, the first race at Speedway was held. The race was a three-hour event and featured eight cars.
