The town of Speedway, Indiana was founded in 1887 by the brothers Charles and David Speed. The Speed family ran a grocery store and train depot until David's death in 1925. In that year, the town took on a new identity as the "Speedway of America." By 1938, the population had grown to over 5,000 people. The popularity of auto racing led to increased demand for handguns and rifle rounds. As production volume grew, so too did prices for firearms. In response to this increase, several manufacturers began producing pistols with high-capacity magazines. This innovation allowed dealers to sell more rounds per minute than they could before. Speedway is a city in and the county seat of Cook County, Indiana, United States. The population was 653 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in what would become Speedway was James Craddock on December 1, 1824. He founded a small community called "New Market" just south of today's Speedway on the banks of the Illinois River. Craddock named his new community after himself, since he had just moved to Indiana from Ohio. Located 2 miles east of present-day Speedway on State Road 22nd Street, New Market grew slowly until it became an important railroad stop in 1868 when the Indianapolis & Northwestern Railroad built a line through town linking Indianapolis withChicago. New Market soon became known as "The Hub". In 1870, William Hines purchased land adjacent to what is now Newton Avenue and developed it into what would become Speedway. By 1875, Speedway had buildings that included a store, post office, jail and Methodist church (Old First Presbyterian). In 1876, four men - James Aiken (founder of American National Bank), John Prentice (a merchant who rebuilt old Fort Dearborn) George Wirtz (a doctor and businessman) and Samuel Sells - pooled their resources to purchase 3 acres near present-day Interstate 5 for $1 million dollars In 1886, US Steel Corporation bought US Steel Works from Armour Manufacturing Company for $8 million dollars As production increased at US Steel's Roanoke Forge plant outside Philadelphia in Pennsylvania during World War I due to demand by America's allies Great Britain and France for munitions made at Roanoke Forge while also providing jobs for Americans not working in those plants Racecar drivers such as Joe Gibbs Sr., Harry Wise Jr., Al Unser Sr., Darrell Waltrip and Gordon Floyd were among those who raced cars at various speedsways around the country during that time including Atascosa Raceway which opened in 1922 worn down by its previous owner Philippi Motorsports fame which closed shortly thereafter because Of financial difficulties . After World War II ended there was no more need for speedway so it was converted into an open air shopping mall where AutoZone is now located

Speedway is located on State Road 210 about east of I-465 and west of US-40. Speedway was named after Edwin "Jim" Speedway (1875-1948), who built the first track there in 1909. The first race at speedway took place on November 3, 1909, when the Indianapolis Motorcycle Club raced a team of two motorcycles against a team of four horses. In 1911, Speedway became an all-boy sports society and began to sponsor races for girls. On October 6, 1913, the first women's motorcar race took place at Speedway when Loretta Lynn ran a car against her husband Hank Garland's motorcycle team. This event was also televised live by ABC television in America at that time. In 1922, $5,000 were donated to build additional tracks around the country as part of the International Speedway Corporation Agreement which gave sanction to newspeedway facilities all over the world including one in Canada which opened in Expo '92 in Calgary Alberta Canada In 1929 manager Harry Wagenhofer leased from J P Morgan $2 million dollars for 10 years for use as an open air racetrack with football and other sports events as well as stockyards and other agricultural operations on it protruding into township land then used for farming purposes only until 1945 when development proposals were made again with this final agreement becoming effective on July 1st 1946 ground surface had been leveled off making speeds now up to 150 mph using current technology
The Speedway opened in 1936, and was the first major American auto race track. It was located on a large parcel of land just outside of Indianapolis. The track had a capacity of 400 cars and it became one of the most popular racing circuits in the United States.
